Brother And Sister Are Burned To Death Antique-Filled Home Destroyed By Fire Chicago, Dec. 14-(UP)— A brother and sister who were known to neighbors as aged eccentric recluses burned to death early today when their ornate Victorian home, filled with costly antiques, was destroyed by fire. Another sister .was rescued by firemen as she ran hysterically through the two-story frame building- near the University of Chicago campus on the city’s south side. Firemen said that Miss Celesta Pratt, 62, apparently died trying to save her brother, Richard, 70, an invalid who had been confined to his bed on the building’s second floor. The sister who was rescued, Jeanette, 60, said she arose shortly after midnight and saw the flames in a stack of paper near her brother's room. “L screamed to Celesta, to get Richard out of his room,” she said. “Theh I ran downstairs to try to telephone for help.” Firemen, called by neighbors, found Jeanette running through the first floor with a heavy antique vase she had filled with water to try to fight the flames herself. They got her out unhurt but it was too late to save the others trapped on the second floor. Jeanette told officials that her brother had a hot plate in his room but she was not certain whether it was burning when the fire started. It was vmcago’s third serious fire in five days. On Friday, 200 residents of the Capitol hotel fled to the' street when the building was rased. On Sunday, five persons were killed when flames raged through the Victoria hotel. The Pratts were understood to be a formerly wealthy family which lost heavily in the 1929 crash. They apparently had a comparatively good Income but authorities said that Jeanette refused to reveal its jsource.
