Decatur Hands Cadets Defeat Friday Night The Decatur . Yellow Jackets, playing far better ball than the previous week, registered their fourth victory of the young season Friday night, defeating the Cadets from Fort Wayne Concordia, 44-41, at the Yellow Jackets gym in this city. It was a close battle most of the way, with Decatur pulling into what seemed a safe lead late in the final period, the Cadets throwing a scare into the packed house by bagging a couple of quick buckets in the final minute to cut the Jackets' final margin to three points. The teams traded points throughout the first quarter, Decatur leading after the first eight minutes of play, 12-11. The Yellow Jackets upped this margin to three points. 22-19, as the teams! left the floor for the half-time intermission. Decatur kept out in front throughout the third quarter, at I one time building the lead to five points at 33-28, but the Cadets cut ! this advantage to four points, 3531, as the quintets entered the final eight minutes of p'ay. A pair of quick fielders by Neil Thomas and George Bair shot Decatur into an eight-point lead shortly after the final period opened and the Jackets stayed safely in front, holding a 44-37 margin ' with three minutes to go. Wayne Zink and Bill Berning clicked for a two-pointer each but the Yellow Jackets froze the ball for the rest of the tilt to rack up their fourth victory in five starts. Bair was Decatur's top scorer with 13 points on six field goals and a free throw. The rest of the Jackets' scoring was well divided. Kenny Grant hitting eight points, Sam Bogner and Harold Bohnke seven each, Thomas six, Dan Freeby two and Doyle Liby one. Zink was the leading scorer for the Cadets with 13 points, while Ralph Bradtmiller hit for nine. The Jackets hit eight of 13 free throws and Concordia 11 of IS. Thirteen personal fouls were called on each team. It was the Jackets' final home game until January 4.
