I Creamed QI I Comments on S.S. , fl Lesson CREAMED COMMENTS Creamed Comments on the Sunday Schoo] Lesson, Letters in the Bible, Phillipians 1:1-11; 5:8,9; for Sunday, December. 12. Pau! in prison at Rome had received from the Philjipian churchand he wrote this letter to express his love and assure them of his preyers. V.l. "Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus that are at Phillippi, with the bishops and deacons.” Paul in calling himself a servant was a 'witness of his relation to the Lord. Paul held the members in high esteem as he called them saints.
V. 2. “Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” Here Pau] combines the Greek and the Hebrew words of greeting, and breathes new spiritual life and meaning into them. Grace is divine favor as seen in forgiveness of sins and in providing all necessities for soul and body. It is logical that peace follow grace. V. 3. "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.” Note how Paul begins his letter with thanksgiving. One can be helpful spiritually to another if his introductory remarks carry gratitude. V. 4. "Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy.” Paul had a prayer list; he believed in the power of intercessory prayer. About all that is left us in this world crisis is prayer. Gandhi was on his way to prayer meeting when he was killed, but his prayers have been effective in saving India* from selfdestruction.
V. 5. "For your fellowship in the gospel till now." Fellowship has been explained as two fellows in a ship; it is Christian friendship, the very highest form of association. V. 6. “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good 'work in you, will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." God will perfect, consummate, complete, finish that which he began in thier regeneration. To be confident is the highest act of faith.
jOtoutlfrU*/ Dean Bosworth says, “The Christian religion, is inbued with Purpose; also, it is Instinc.ive in human nature to seek progress; and the responsibility, above all other responsibilities laid upon men. is to bring their varying progress into indentity 'with the Divine Purpose.” In a word, if you learn the purpose of God for you and make it your purpose, you have discharged your noblest responsibility. Book Review Mahatma Gandhi, An Interpretation. by E. Stanley Jones, Abing-doji-Cokesbury Press gives a portrait of Gapdhi himself; reveals the power that made him the spiritual leader of an oppressed and impotent India, the revolutionary technique that frustrated the British Empire, the meaning of i his life and death to our 'World: today. It is a challenge to Chris tians to be Christian.

V.7. “Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel ye all are partakers of my grace.” Pau] felt that these devoted Christians had the constancy of mind and the spirit of obedience upon which the continual reception of divine grace depends. The note of sincerity was sounded. They were all partners and therefore partakers of God’s grace. V.B. “For God is my record, how greatly I long after you in all the bowels of Jesus.” The phrase, “in the bowels," was a current way of saying with affection. Paul yearns for them -with an affection, such as Christ himself had for them. There is such a thing as loving people into the kingdom of God. V. 9. “And -this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment.” Abounding love comes by close fellowship with Christ. The wish is that increasing love may be accompanied with increasing discernment. Love may be pure and at the same time may be misdirected.
V.lO. “That ye may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ." Love is to keep on increasing and overflowing. Perfect love is to be a perpetual flood, more and more abounding. The experience of love is just the beginning of a robust, healthy, happy, overcoming, overflowing, victorious Christian life. V.ll. "Being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.” It is Christ who enables us to manifest the, righteous fruits.
V.B. "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, -whatsoever things are of good report; if there he any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." The breeding place of good habits is in the mind. We must make an effort to dwell on thoughts that are constructive and Christ-like. V. 9. “Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me do; and the God of peace shall be with you.” Paul had lived so carefully that he dared to set himself as an example. Lesson Prayer Lesson Prayer: We are grateful for the preserved letters written by great men of character. Grant that we may take the attitude toward the New Testament as letters from God composed by his accepted sons whom he inspired to express his thoughts and his will.' Then with this attitude help us to answer them by our lives expressed in thoughts, words and deeds. Cloricus Says: Clericus says: “Grace is the favor of God, thoroughly undeserved, but given out of his generous bounty. W e are never saved unti) God applies this grace to our hearts. It is the divine potency which changes us from selfish, natural beings into the glorious children of God. Repentance and faith are our contributions to the process of saiva tion; grace and all glorious changes which it produces are God's contribution to that great enterprise.” Effective Chris'lan lives are grown, not suddenly achieved.
