200 Flee Chicago Hotel During Fire Report Os Earlier Fire Under Probe Chicago, Dec. 10.—(PU)— Fire forced about 200 residents from . the ancient Hubbard hotel early I today, and the fire department in- | vestigated reports that the hotel | employes handled a fire two hours | earlier without notifying authorities. The flames started on the second ! floor and spread upward through the six-story building, which once was one of Chicago’s finest hotels. The top floor of the 60-year-old landmark was destroyed. 1 Residents, most of them old age pensioner?, fled into the cold in their night clothes. Red Cross workers took them to a nearby I public health building. The old hotel was closed for six i months as a fire hazard but was I reopened in November, 1947, after complying with fire safety regulations. Deputy fire commissioner AnthI ony Mullaney said he had ordered an investigation of reports that a rfire on the second floor, in the same spot where the second blaze 'started, occurred earlier in the; evening. He said it was possible that the first fire never was completely extinguished, and that it smouldered jin the walls until breaking out again.
Hours after the second fire began firemen still played hoses on the building. They said a wall was, weakened and might collapse.
