President Truman Elected With Less Than Majority Vote New York. Dec. 7 — (I’Pl — President Truman was elected with less than a majority of the total popular vo"e cast in the Nov. 2 election. United Press tabulations showed today. The tabulation, with the official count from 42 states and unofficial from six. showed a total popular vote of 45.6.52.679. Os these. Mr. Truman received 24.1)59.191 votes, or 2x2.115 fewer than half the vote already tabulated. The president, however, had a plurality'of 2.135.129 votes over Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, whose popular vote was 21.921,065. Other presidential candidates polled theso votes-: Gov. J. Strom Thurmond. States' Rights Democrat. 1.169.240. Henry A. Wallace. Progressive. 1.148,797. Pell Legion Posts !On Veterans' Bonus Ask Indiana Posts Fill Questionnaire Indianapolis. Dec. 7.—(l’P)— Indiana's 479 American Legion posts were asked today to submit their ideas about a World War II veterans' bonus bill. i Members of the Indiana department's bonus study commission said questionnaires were sent to all Hoosier legion posts. The letters . asked post commanders to call i special meetings to fill out the questionnaires The commission, headed by state legion commander Joseph Lutes. | said a new question would be 1 brought up: should widows, children and dependent parents of servicemen killed in the war also receive a bonus Commission members said legionnaires would not be asked if they favor such payments. but only how much should I he paid. The questionnaires polled legion 1 members on such questions as | eligibility, length of residence in, the state, payments for domestic' i and foreign service and penalties) for fraudulant claims. [Two Juveniles Are Put On Probation I Two juveniles charged with stealing manhole covers and an electric transformer were beginning their time on probation today.
