Commodores Launch Home Card Friday The Decatur Commodores, defeated in their season opener after a rugged battle with the Kangaroos at Kirkland Tuesday night, will launch their home season Friday night. The Commodores will meet the Monmouth Eagles at the Yellow Jackets gym. also the home floor for the Commodores, tomorrow night. The Commodores, under the guidance of a new coach, Dave Terveer, will seek revenge for a pair of defeats suffered at the hands of the Eagles last year, by scores of 2625, and 49-44. Monmouth won the Adams county tournament last season and had one of the best records of county teams. However, Coach Myron Lehman lost his entire starting five and is currently experimenting with an entirely new team. The Eagles to date have played two games, losing to the Monroe Bearkatz and the Hartford Gorillas. The Commodores home games this year are scheduled to start at 7 o'clock for reserve games and 8:15 for the varsity tilts. Bloomington Semi-Final Is Wide Open (Editor's note: This is the third of four stories on probable team alignments by semi-final districts for the 1948-49 Indiana high school basketball campaign) BY KURT FREUDENTHAL Indianapolis, Nov. 11—(UP)— The Bloomington semi-final district gave all indications today of again becoming the “hotbed” of .basketball when Indiana’s prepschool basketeers start squaring off for state title honors next February and March. The southern district hasn't fielded a champion since Evansville Bosse turned the trick in 1944 and 1945. The downstaters were favored to make the grade last year but ran into a north-cen-tral buzzsaw. There seemed to be little change in the lineup of downstate power-] houses from last year, but there appeared to be a better than even chance that Evansville Central, a' front-runner most of the season i last time, won't hog the spotlight.l. The Central Bears, finalists four! times but never champs in the 37, years in which the Indiana high I school athletic association has sponsored the classic, lost Lee t Hamilton, Gene Southwood and Joe j Schwitz, to the graduation mill, j Coach Walter Riggs retained WalI -er “Ziggy” Vanover, Dick Burdette and Alvin Sutheimer for what seems to be the makings of another strong club—although not as powerful as last year's. Evansville Reitz and Bosse, usually the other two pocket city greats, lost individual standouts I which neither of them seem able 1 to replace. Reitz, although it re- 1 'ained six-foot-two Mai Cook and 1 Bob Hertzberger, lost hot-shot Jerry Canterbury and Bosse followers • will miss the versatile Dave Karlokus. New- Albany and Bedford, two vther perennial hardwood threats,! were hit even harder. New Al-! bany's Bulldogs, its "state in ’4B" ’topes dashed by Jasper in last March's semi-finals, graduated six-foot-five Orval Stone and four six-' foot-two shots who comprised the | backbone of Gordon Raney’s quin- i ‘et. They were Jojo Dean, Jim Haller. Jim Fougerousse, and Chick Middleton. But six-foot-six Bob Clayton, now a junior, together with Pete Gill, Walter and Paul; Poss and Don Loughmiller will give ‘he Bulldogs another tall and dangerous club. Ralph Holmes at Bedford will rely principally on boys who playid on the Stonecutters' once-beat-en junior varsity last year. Gone ire such top men as Jack (Slats) Turner, Wayne Girdley and six-foot-four center John Condiff. Cabby O'Neill trimmed his varsity to 13 players three weeks ago. an indication that the Wildcats are ready. Although they lack heights ,the Kats will miss Jack Heitman. Cliff Mehrtens and Al Graehler. But they'll be speedy, and if Ed and Dimp Stenftenagel and Bill Litchfield get sufficient support, the Jasperites will be tough. Jeffersonville's independent quintet is in practically the same boat as Jasper. It will have another typical fast-breaking but imall team. The Terre Haute outlook was still a big question mark, but Garfield, minos the huge Clyde Lovellette. and Wiley should he strongest. Bloomington, finally, could use another Bob Dobson. If Its hardwood combination is anything like its football team, it'll be dangerous.
