Charge Republicans Aid Progressives Claim Indiana GOP Is Aiding Wallace Indianapolis, Oct. 16.—(UP)— The Democrats charged the Republicans with aiding the Progressive* today as the Hoosier csmpalgn raged on. While President Truman visited Indianapolis last night, the Demo cratic state committee uncorked a new blast against the GOP The Democrats accused Republican state chairman Clark Springer with promoting and financing an "undercover scheme" to support the Henry Wallace campaign While reporters and party officials and workers were gathered for the president's appearance here, copies of the Union City GazetteTimes, which contained a banner story on the subject, were distributed. Later, chairman Ira Haymaker issued a statement, charging the Republicans with trying to "ctkifuse the voters ” Henry Schricker, Democfßfli gubernatorial candidate, charged in a speech preceding President Truman's address here that the Republicans were "afraid" so they "decided to aid and support the Wallace campaign '' Haymaker said later that Springer sauglit aecretly to "promote the third party ... In the forlorn hope that . . . they might by this nefarious stunt keep those votes from Henry Schricker." Earlier, the Itemocrats accused the OOP of aiding the state rights Democrats. The Republicans admitted they let the Dixlecrats in Indiana use their mimeograph Haymaker said that Springer hired a man identified as James W Bolen, "a veteran minor political figure of Indianapolis.” to go to NeW York to "Investigate the hest method of promoting the campaign for Wallace." The Times-Gazette story said that it had an affidavit signed by Bowlsn in which he said he also "called on various Republican county chairmen throughout the State and discussed with them I plans for building up the Wallai e movement in Indiana ' "In Indiana.” said Haymaker, "the GOP secretly promotes the very party which it condemns as Communist controlled." SOVIET PLANES ti'ont From l'.nw One! tails of fusing the three western zones into a single unit. A western spokesman meanwhile announced that the increase of 13 percent in rations for Berlin raxl dents, announi i-d some time ago. would go Into effect Nov. 1. The increase was granted, he satd. to help the Berliners sustain the hardships Imposed upon them by the "Inhumane and illegal'' Soviet blockade of Berlin.
