Spahn, Lemon Scheduled As Day's Hurlers Boston. Oct. 7 — (UPi — The brilliant pitching which marked the first game figured to continue in the world series today a* Warren Spahn of the lioaton Bravea faced Bob I<emon of the Cleveland Indiana. It didn't figure to be a thriller like yeaterday .when Johnny Sain bested Bobby Beller to give the Bravea a 1 to 0 vl< -tory in one of the best hurling duels In aeries history. But Spahn and Lemon are pretty close to being as good as they come, and if they are in form thia afternoon It could be another battle that will go right down to the wire With a left hander going for the Braves, manager Lou Boudreau downhearted but still confident announced two lineup changes Allie Clark, who makes a specialty of rifling line drives off southpaws will play right field and bat second,! with Walt Judnich going on the bench Centerfielder larrry I toby who hit second yesterday, will hit . seventh. The rest of the Indian lineup will be the same, as will the Braves t batting order. Bill Salkeld, who I drew the opening day catching job. t will start In that post again "Naturally, we felt badly about not getting Feller a run out there f yesterday.” Boudreau said "But i I'm still sure we’ll win the series. I Bobby will go again in Cleveland t Sunday if not before and we’ll do better by him then ’ It was a tough one for the lowa I flreball»r to lose, for he yielded only two hits in turning in one < f the most brilliantly pitched ' games in series history. But he j made the mistake of passing Sal keld to start off the Braves’ eighth and then with men on second and first with two out. grooved a fast ball for Tommy Holmes The Braves right fielder belted I’ down the third base line and I’hil ’ Masi running for Salkeld, cann in to score the run which gave the Braves victory "J thought I had Holmes set up for that fast one,’’ Feller said "The time before he was up. it was the I same count on» and one and he drove my fast one back to me.” ’ Feller was downcast, for this had been the big chant e lie had been • 11 I

waiting for- a shot at a world series game He did very well, but not well enough. Marv Rickert, who was called up from .Milwaukee the week the season dosed to take the place of the injured Jeff Health, got the only other hit off Feller As for Sain. he. too, hurled a great game He yielded only four hits, and with runners on the bases, bore down to close the door 1 on the Indians, whose batting pow- ■ er to left field was hampered by a strong wind. Not since Bucky Harris, then managing the Yankees, put the winning run on base in the 1947 series, haw there been the second guessing which plagued Boudreau today. The second guessers were wondering why he ordered Eddie Stan ky passed in the Braves' eighth inn Ing
Salkeld had started that inning with a walk —the second of three which Feller yielded and was sacificed to second by Mike McCormick Boudreau then ordered Feller to pass Stanky to get Sain. That strategy almost worked, for vith Sain at bat. Feller whirled tround and threw to Boudreau at lecond. He stabbed at the fallen I I’hil Masi, running for Salkeld, but umpire Bill Stewart, a National
leaguer who had been in several hot disputes during the season -ailed Musi safe Boudreau protested and said lat ■r in the Indians dressing room that ‘ I had him but these are the best umpires in the game and that's that." Stewart's derision meant only me man wan out So when Sain filed to light it was only two down instead of three That brought up Holmes, who produced the game winning hit The whole business caused a lot >f baseball folk to wonder whether Boudreau was smart in ordering itanky passed They pointed out hat the spark-plug second base man was playing on an injured inkle and did not have his usual iharpness at the plate But HouIreau looked at it this way: "Stank y is a great guy in the -latch. I know Sain is a good hit er as pitchers go, but my reports ire that he hits a lot of balls on -he ground So I gambled for a louble play I would do the same hing again The Braves' opening victory shortened the odds but still left the udians the favorite to win the best four out of seven series They now ire 10 to 7 to win the series, 6 to 5 o win today's second game They were 13 to 5 to win the terles before yesterday's game The forecast for today was for
