Drivers Licenses Sales At New High Propose Different Tax On Automobiles Indianapolis. Oct. 6 — (UP) ” More Hoosiers are buying drivers licenses this year tsu»n ever be fore and soon they may pay less to operate their car*, na’e "IB rials indicated today H. Dale Brown, director of the state bureau of motor vehicles, predicted that Indiana would pass the 2.b6f1.'i00 mark in the sale of drivers' licences by the end of the year. This, said Brown, would . outnumber by some tt0.600 the number of licenses sold in 1946-47. Brown also expected more than 1.490.000 motor vehicle registrations. Meanwhile, the Indiana highway users' conference yesterday approve I proposed legislation to substitute an extra state tax for the present personal property tax nn automobile*. The pan recently was proposed by the governor’* tax study commission The IHCC cal’ed ihe proposed tax "a money-saver for the motorist" and a ' money saver for the state. ” Conference official* eat I mated that persons now pay an average tax of Jl4 25 for passeng er vehicles, in addition to their l‘ license fee Under the suggested lax plan, they said, a tax of 111 would be levied in addition to the license fee. The IHCC explained that an estimated s<m’.oW vehicle* at present escape personal property taxes. If Indiana drivers were required tc pay the proposed tax when they paid for their licenses, the state would thereby receive additions revenue, officials said. Brown said a record number of drivers' license purchases would bring in enough revenue to pay for operation of an auto Ih enslng system inaugurated by the 1947 general assembly. Previously, state officials had planned to pay for the new program over a fouryear period. Two Indianapolis ’olicemen Injured Indianapolis.
