Lawrence Cannon, Indiana public service commissioner, is here to protest Uie curtailment He said the Panhandle officials informed the commissioners last night of the status of deliveries up and down their Texas to-Michigan pipe line. Cannon, who met with the commissioners and the Panhandle officials until late last night, said he is going over the information today He and the federal commissioners are investigating the necessity of a SO percent reduction to Indiana industries that taka gas on a "when and If available'* basis. Because, of the shortage of Panhandle gas. the commission this summer told Panhandle to curtail these industries in Indiana and eastern Illinois, as much as necessary to fill firm gas requirements In Ohio and Michigan. weekend Panhandle informed these industries their supplies would be cut. 50 percent.

Tenn., Sept. 16 — (UP)—An official of thg> Aseocla tion of Oak Ridge Scientists and Engineers today accepted the challenge of a house spy hunter to produce a "single scientist" who quit the Oak Ridge atomic laboratories for fear of being “smeared.” Hay W. Stoughton, chairman of the association's executive com- ! mlttee. said he could name at least three scientists who "from personal knowledge" have resigned here recently with questions ot 'oyahy as their No. 1 motive. Those three. Stoughton raid, transferred to another atomic projec t site only to leave "as soon as possible" for private jobs. He said other members of his association knew personally of additional scientists who have quit for the same tea on. ifa a<ld<si that he did not feel free fn name names without the consent of the scientists them selves. Otherwise he said he would be "glad" to tell Rep John McDowell. R . Pa., who they were. Stoughton has insisted that the names of scientists who fear loyally attacks arc rare y. if ever, exchanged bv scientists' associations and that they "never tell their stories" until they have received security clearance McDowell said in Washington that "there hasn’t been a single scientist who has left the government becaure he is afraid of being smeared." "if there has been one. I would like the scientists to prove it." McDowell said. Stoughton last Tuesday charged. in commenting on a recent speech bv President Truman, that an estimated 40 percent of seniot scientists here have quit in recent months because they feared possible attacks on "flimsy and unsubstantiated grounds." That estimate later was termed "technically comet” by C. N. Rucker, executive director of the Oak Ridge national laboratory.
