Says Indiana Water Level Is Improved Urges Conservation Measures Be Used Indianapolis. Sept. 15 — tl'Pl An expert on natural resources said today that Indiana's water level has improved the last three years. Charles ” ”»'-»>ert. director ot the Indiana department of conservation's division of water resources. said the general trend in ground water levels in most areas of the state has been upward at a slow rate corresponding to the more nearly normal rainfall since 1945. Rainfall was below normal most ot the time from 193 b to 1945. Bechert * statements appeared in the current issue of the conservation department's publication. “Outdoor Indiana '* Other experts have expressed alarm on a national scale o'er the depletion of the underground water supply because of general water waste and modern conveniences such as air-conditioning. “Indiana lias been endowed with a more or less abundant supply of water." Bechert said "(Butt our water resources are n >t inexhaustible. “Much has lieen said about det lining water levels in Indiana and fear has been expressed that our available ground water supplies are becoming greatly diminished "Some of the reports have been exaggerated Bechert said a dropping water table was not a sure sign the water supply was failing , A lowering of the ground water table is not necessarily indbative of a depletion in the supply of ground water.'' he said “A lowering of the water table will often result tn a dec res.se in the water lost by evaporation and transpiration (by plant life.)” Bechert said it would be “purely conjecture" to say whether Indiana would face a serious water shortage in the future But he warned it would be wise to practice conservation measures For one thing, he suggested that flowing wells be closed off by tap when not in use. "We allow our flowing wells to run 24 hours a day for 365 days a year." Bechert said, “never considering that the water is merely going to waste. We also pump tremendous quantities of water from
