Says Tobin Losing Teamsters Control Tobin Assistant Is Fired By Board Indianapolis, Sept 2— (t’Pi— An associate of president Daniel J Tobin of the AFL teamsters union, fired hy the union's International executive board, said today his dismissal proved that i Tobin virtually has lost control I of the union to Dave Beck of Seattle. Wash. The statement was made hy Les ter M. Hunt, a Tobin assistant who , edited and wrote most of the articles for the union's magazine Hunt was fired effective last night, a day after the executive board •net in Chicago. He said it was "the culmination of a six-year fight" with Beck, executive vice-president of the union and heir apparent to Tobin’s 11-year-old Job as general president. "Be< k has virtually succeeded in • taking over the Teamsters’ union.' Hunt said. "He's been trying to do !it for six year. I've been openly fighting him and spearheading opposition to Beck, but I've been doing it alone." Hunt said Berk wus responsible , for shifting control of the union magazine "out from under Dan | Tobin and me." The board re- : cently voted to publish the maga zine hereafter in Washington, instead of Indianapolis, International headquarters of the union. Hunt said that Be< k's strength , on the board lay in the fact that Tobin's supporters were "mostly, older men who don't have any fight ' left." He said Beck and the 73-year-old Tobin disagreed violently over the vears on union philosophy. Tobin. : head of a union he < laims is the ! biggest in the country, believed that membership should lie confin ed to truck drivers. Beck "wants to take in hollyhis k growers and anybody else who has the 42 mem bership fee." Hunt said Hunt, who was on the Teamster payroll as a general organizer, i said he hoped to return to news , paper work. He said he wasn't surprised he lost his job. "I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner," he added Moro than 3u.“('O employees ofi the scheduled airlines, or one out I of three, are M'orld War II veteran!.
