Plan New Policy On Armed Forces' Reds Forrestal Orders Uniform Policies Washington, Sept. 2 — tl’l’t Defense secretary James F'orrestal has ordered a joint committee of the army, navy and air force to work out a new and uniformed policy on Communists iu the armed forces, it was ilisclose'l today. The move was prompted in part I by the decision of selective service I .Ifi' ia.h not to bar Communists I'hey tcared such a step would enI courage some jouth* to embrace Communism to escape the draft. t he various biancnes of thearmed services for some time have had their own methods for preventing communists from worming fhelr »ay mio sensitive posts whore they might have access to secret information. in most cases, party inemliers are given menial duty and are placed .nder constant surveillance to make sure they do nut try to spread Communist doctrine. Defense sources said the new policy may call for the discharge of all known Communists. They said the articles of war authorise such dismissals. I There was no indication when the I special committee will complete >ts work. The army, navy and air force, I meanwhile, have undertaken a campaign to teach their recruits the roals of Communism. The recruit is taught that Communism in the direct opposite of I .lemoi racy and that Communists I advocate the violent overthrow of I the I’ S government. DECAT til, invmw ___ Southern Democrats Warned By McGrath Warns Dixiecrats Are Fourth Party By United Press Southern congressional candidates were warned today that they cannot be Dixiecrats and Democrats at the same time. Democratic national chairman J Howard McGrath said In Washing ton that nominally-Democratic of-fice-seekers must either support President. Truman s campaign for election or else stop regarding themselves as members of the Democratic party. He said candidates in the soutn will ''automatically" be withdrawing from the party If they spurn the national Truman-Barkley ticket for the Dlxiecrat slate of Gov J. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina and Gov Fielding Wright of Mississippi. The Dixiecrats are a fourth party in this campaign, he said, and their supporters are “leaving the Democratic party just as effectively as if they supported the Republicans or Henry Wallace’s progressive party.”
