Plan Grain Storage On County's Farms Steps Being Taken To Meet Emergency Steps to be taken to meet the grain storage emergency were outlined here today by Winfred L. Gerk*. chairman of the Adams county agricultural conservation committee. He attended a district meeting oh grain storage and price supports held at Huntington yesterday. Mr Gerke said that action will have to he taken at once to provide storage for the 1948 record grain crop if loss of farm income and valuable food and feed Is pre vented. He called for the coopera tion of all farmers and others who have an interest in saving grain in doing all they can to help provide storage for the record crop. He said that at the district meeting it was pointed out that the 1948 national grain crop wheat, corn, oat*, barley, rye. soybean and grain sorghum will total some where around 6X* billion bushels, which leaves the country 900 million to one billion bushels short of

enough storage space for the crop Estimates -were given at the meeting that the state will need add! tlonal storage for 92 million bushels of corn. All of the grains will be competing for the limited st..r age for the corn and soybean crop Mr, Gerke stated that loan* and purchase agreement* will he available to support prices to farmers but the effectiveness of these programs will depend to a great extent on getting the grain Into proper storage. Details of these support program* are avail able at the county ACP office located at Decatur, which Is open each day except Saturday. Other steps to be taken are a survey to determine how much of what kind of storage is needed, then to do all that can be done to obtain materials for additional storage. Temporary storage appear* to be part of the answer to protecting this year’s crop Action will be taken to obtain materials for this kind of storage "We are going to have to take care of storing our grain right here in Adams county for the most part,” Mr Gerke said “We cannot depend <>n country and terminal elevators taking care of our grain And most of that storage will have to be taken care of right out on the farm where the grain was pro duced.” A daily serving of potatoes provides as much as one-fourth of the normal vitamin C quota.
