Gerke. chairman of the Adams county agricultural conservation association, announced today that the 1949 wheat goal for Indiana Is 1.559,000 acres compared to a planted acreage of 1,796,000 acres for harvest in 1948 This is 86 percent of the 1948 planted acreage. Mr. Gerke stated "all Adams county wheat producers should give careful consideration to the recommended acreage prior to seeding time this fall " It is believed by many United States department of agriculture officials that exports from the 1949 crop will in all probability be ereatly reduced, also that a better balance of soil conserving crops as compared to depleting crops will be established by a reduction in the 1949 wheat acreage Harvested rye goal for the state Is 80,<W»9 acres. Mr. Gerke stated that there was little change In the beef cattle goals for 1949 and that no specific number has been set by states Beef cows on hand as of January 1. 1949 will he at least 15.5 million head Better management, improv ed feeding practices and thorough culling will put the rattle industry in better position to supply the meat requirements of the increasing population STATES IN (Cunt.
