Au revoir to the Ruppert Auction School graduates. o ■ -o Graduates of the Rep pert School of Auctioneering departed today
for their homes, having completed an extensive three weeks' training in the technique of salesmanship and conducting public auctions The men were gentlemen and Decatur was glad to have them as guests. o o Dealers and prospective purchasers are puxzled over the auto transaction, purported to have token place in London a few days ago. An American airline pilot walked into a London show room and bought an American-made automobile for less money than the price quoted here. Besides, he got immediate delivery. The auto companies may have a good reason tor shipping new models abroad to keep their place in foreign trade, but oae thing is certain the home market hasn't yet been supplied. o o The Democratic Editorial Association will hold its summer meet-
tng at French Lick. August 27 and 28. Aa is customary at these meetings, very little business will be transacted and most of the time will be devoted to politics. The headline speaker will be VicePresidential candidate Barkley and K be can repeat a speech as wonderful as the one given before the Democrat National convention, the editors and guests will be indoctrinated with the cause of democracy to carry them through as militant leaders in the campaign. o-—o Athletes from the Russian satellite countries that participated In the London Olympic games are not going back to {heir homelands. Once free from the Communistdominated countries, they would rather die than return home. They are but a handful! of those who are trying to escape from the Russian slavery system, which proves to the world that the Soviet Vnlon is literally a hell on earth where men and women are pushed around like mistreated animals. There will be a day when the iron Curtain fails to hold freedom loving people in subjugation. — —O o Huntington's centennial celebration will open with a Field Mass ’ Sunday morning with the

Most Rev. Bishop John F. Nidi, bishop of Fort Wayne, as the celebrant of the religious rite. As was observed in connection with Decatur's centennial In 1936, Sunday is 1 religious day on the week's prot gram and services will be held by other denominations. The Rev. Simeon Schmitt, pastor of as Peter and Paul's church, Is chairman of the Sunday program. A city's centennial is sufficient cause for public celebration and to impress the religious side of life is in keeping with good communities. The shut down of the Kraft Foods plant in this city becomes permanent, with the announcement from the company's Chicago office, that "the Decatur plant had not met the expectations of the company in a highly competitive milk area." Strike hound since August, 11, negotiations failed to bring about a settlement of the issues involved and now the modern building will serve only as a "monument” to the cheese industry. Manufacture of cheese was recently resumed in the plant and about 50 persons were employed in Its operation. We are not advising labor unions or company man-
agement what to do. but can’t help saying that we regret the closing of a factory, that at one time was the seat of the dairy industry in this part of the state. o o— — The Reserves: So much hullabaloo resulted immediately from the sugestion that the National Guard be federalized, made by the committee on civilian components of the Department of Defense, that the other recommendations in that committee's extensive report are in danger of being obscured. Considered opinion is that any possibility of congressional action to put the National Guard under permanent federal control is so alight as to be negligible. But some of the other recommends tions for improvement of the military reserves might have a good chance for legislative action, and are worth close study. in essence the committee recommended that each basic service have a single reserve force, and that these reserve forces then in such away as to make them inbe strengthened and reorganized stantly available for emergency service. The report does not merely set forth this obviously desirable objective; it Hats dttoiied changes of policy and methods which the committee believes
would make the reeerves effective. There Is no question of the good sense In having military stand-by forces which exist in reality and not just on paper and which really can be mobilised at a moment's notice. Such forces would be genuine reserves. The report of the committee which thinks such reserves can be established should teceive careful attention.
