Housewives Confident Strikes Will Work L. A.‘Consumers Plan 'Fair Price Lists' Ry United Press Housewives set up fo r mal organisationa in three more cities today to fight high meat prices Hut across the nation there still was no hint that prices were coming down New Consumer resistance groups wore organized at Los Angeles, Den' ver and San Franciaco. While housewives across the nation fought the meat price battle, the price of butter dropped of Its own accord For the second day in a row. wholesale butter at NewYork dropped two cents a pound. Grade double-A was down to 7?-Ik cents a pound At Chicago butter had dropped 4-S cents in two days. The price decline was attributed to increased stocks of butter In cold storage Despite high meat prices, small slaughter houses reported they were having trouble staying in business. At Philadelphia some inde- ■ pendent packing houses were put up for sale. Arthur Dennis, vice president of the national meat council. said they had been forced to t cut their profit margin to the minimum. or retailers would refuse to buy. ' At Los Angeles, the housewives r league against high prices orga nlzed on a permanent basis and set I up a committee to prepare a “fair ( price list" on meats. They planned R> submit the list I to packers and retailers to "nego- , tlate" price reductions. Austin. Tex., housewives decided to extend their ban on meat purchases until Sept. 1. Mrs. Lila J Markham, she Austin organizer, estimated that the strike had re ' duced meat sales 50 to 75 percent Houston and Denver women organized formal price strikes yesterday. Mrs. D. C. Carson of Denver said the campaign there will cintinue until prices drop 10 cents a pound It appeared that the Canadian action in permitting export of cattle would not help to boast the American supply >nd thus lower prices. American cattle buyers showed little interest tn the cattle offered to them yesterday at Toronto at 13! to 134 a hundredweight. The Americans said they were ready to buy at 926 to S3O and that Canadian sellers could not expect to draw top V. fl. prices because the quality Is lower. Some shipment* Into the U. fl. were made from Windsor. Ont., across the International bridge from Detroit. As result, steak prices jumped C to 7 cent* a pound in Windsor and Detroit housewives stopped their daily trips across the bridge because prices in the two cities were almost the same. At New York, state legislator Philip Hhupier of Brooklyn urged Gov Thomas E. Dewey to Investigate “chaotic and disgraceful" meat and poultry price* in New York City.
