Ebed tnelec h, a despised colored servant, wax a man ot characte" showing unusual mercy and courage in being a helper to Jeremiah, the prophet Here again we have the lesson of the high value attached to a common man. Here was a brave proposal. The real cause of Jeremiah s imprison inent was the determination of men in authority, whom Ebed-melech called evil men. to put to death the prophet. Jeremiah, because he prophesied what did not please them. Ebed-melech had the courage to risk his life for doing all he could for Jeremiah V 10. "Then the king command- I ed E >ed iiieh-r h the Ethiopian saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out ot the dungeon before he dies." Rags and worn-out ger : inent* often constitute the only thing we have to offer In God'* I service Our poor abilities used In God's service will prove noble and effective. V. 12. "And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, "Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords, and Jeremiah did so." Ebed-melech had compassion and forethought In that be would rescue the prophet with a* little discomfort as possible, the rags to be arranged under his arms Here is the lesson of cooperation, the thirty men. Ebedmelech all working together. Instead of competition and clashes between peo pie* and nation. God's plan Is that of co-operation: that is brotherhood V. 13. "So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him out of the dungeon; and Jeremlam remained in the court of the prison." Problem "Rivalry with Russia is a new problem for us. but we had better make up our minds that we shall be pre occupied with it for a very long time to come." Walter l.ippmann told a public meeting at the, College of William and Mary in ; Williamsburg recently. "We must, give up the notion that the choice Is between one world in which the Russians are our partners, and two worlds in which we must annihilate the Russians or they must annihilate ns," he said." I believe that the l>est policy is to recognise that the rivalry will remain, and not to expect it to disappear or to think it could be abolished by the United Nations or by a victorious war, and I having recognised that the rivalry I is a permanent fact to use our' whole power ot influence to regs-' late it, to keep it within bounds, to establish spheres of influence which limit the rivalry, and a balance of power in the world which checks it.
