THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR. INDIANA
Tomato Canning Is Underway In State I f Bumper Crop Seen Likely In Indiana Indianapolis. Aug. 4 — (UPI — Shiny, red tomatoes, one of Ind iana's chief claims to fame, start ed rolling into some of the state's 200 canning plants today as Hoosiers got ready for the annual “pack." Farmers and canners said the prospects for a bumper crop and for a new record production of canned tomatoes were very good Canning factories in southern Indiana were already in operation. All plants in the state were expected to begin canning by mid August with the peak of operations coming about Sept. 1. The familiar odor of cooking tomatoes, a traditional sign of the harvest season in scores of Ind iana cities and towns, was in the air already in a few downstate communities. Secretary A. E. Dreyer of the Indiana canners association said the anuual pack would give seasonal employment to about 50,000 men and women, many of them immigrants from Mexico and southern states. Thousands of additional workers will be employed in the fields, picking what is bailed as the best quality tomato grown anywhere. Canners hoped to equal the peak production of about 12,000,000 cases of canned tomatoes set in 1946. They said If it didn't rain too much from now on, the tomatoes now ripening in the fields might enable them to reach that goal. Total acreage, however. Is slightly under the 1946 figure. The state weather bureau's weekly crop bulletin said the sunny. dry weather of the past few days had aided the crop. It said they were “in good condition with ripening beginning throughout most of the central and some of the northern sections Purdue University, in Its weekly report on crops, said tomatoes were in good supply in southern Indiana and will be exported for market sales from Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and Vincennes this week. There was little doubt that this year's production would exceed the 1947 total. The crop last year was not too good and production of tomatoes fell under 10.000.000 cases. For years Indiana was the number one producer of canned tomatoes. Then California, with its sunny weather and vast expanse of irrigated land, forged into the lead. Hoosier tanners are out to regain the lead for Indiana. But they say it may take more than one season to do it. Tomato production in the state has boomed 25 percent in the last few seasons, but California's has Increased even more. With a break from the weatherman during the next few seasons, Indiana packers and farmers hope to put Indiana at the top again in quantity as well as quality.
