Charges Censorship Os Anti-Red Talks Former Education Head Makes Charge Washington, Auk. 2 — fUP) — Former U. E. education commissioner John W Studebaker charges that government censorship prevented him from exposing the "dangers of communism'' in the schools. He blamed the office of federal «ecurity administrator, Oscar Ewing, bl* government superior, for the censorship which he said was impoead on speeches and statements. in a letter to Ewing. Studebaker said that one speech urging teachers to expose communism was killed in the administrator's office. Another, he said, which he himself delivered at the University of California at Los Angeles. brought criticism from an unnamed Ewing aide who advised that it be "toned down" for subsequent publication. Studebaker, who retired July 15. sent copies of his letter to members of the senate and house appropriations committees. When he comp'ained about the censorship, he said, he was told that it was up to the state department and the FBI to explain communism to high school and college students. "To accept (this > diction.” Mid Studebaker. . would be tantamount to n« having this vitally Important educational task done at all. at least so far as the fedezal government is concerned." The former commissioner also complained that politics were permitted to Intrude in the management of the U. S. office of education. He characterized Ewing as "admitted'y a partisan politician." and said: "There is a deep-rooted tradition in this country . . . that the function of education in a democracy should be completely removed from parftsanship.” Ewing is a close friend and political adviser of President Truman. At Searsport. Me. where he is vacationing, he said. •%here has been no censorship that I know of." In the speech which he was asked to "tone down.” Studebaker said, he had declared that "no avowed or proven communist <s fit to be entrusted with the job
