QUICKIES by Ken Reynolds ’few "This Inflation is getting out of hand—why folks are even getting four times the results from a Democrat Want Ad now!" Farm Safety Week Emphasizes Safety In Farm Practices As many farm people are killed in highway traffic as lose their lives at farm work. For this reason. today has been set aside to stress highway safety as a vital part of national farm safety week. You should be able to say “yes" to these safe driving questions. 1. Does your driveway provide a clear view of the road? 2. Do you always avoid backing on to public highways? 3. Do you drive within speed limits and obey the rules of the road? 4. Do you avoid passing on curves and hills? 5. Do you obey traffic signals? 6 Do you drive on the right side of the road? 7. Do you signal your intentions to turn, to stop and to pass? 8. Do you drive more carefully when children and pedestrians are in the road? 9. Do you avoid "cheating” traffic lights? 10. Do you always drive more slowly at night and in bad weather when roads are slippery? 11. Do you stop before crossing railroad crossings or entering the highway? 12. Do you approach intersections with car under complete control? 13. Do you make sure that your car is in good order including brakes, tires, lights, and steering gear? 14. Do you prevent your attention from wandering through conversation or slghtseeihg? CRISIS SLOWS (font. From Page One) used, we would be prepared to go on to discuss any other problem affecting Germany which may have been the cause of difficulties between the four governments," he said. The reference was to plans for a separate state of western Germany. British sources said the plans would be held up until an agreement on four - power talks could be reached. "These discussions might even be broadened to cover other problems as well,” Bevin said. This was a reference to British willingness to seek an all-European set tleinent with the Russians. Winston Churchill promised the support of the opposition he beads tor Revin’s statement. Churchill's statement disclosed that the British still were demobilizing 20.000 men a month, although the release of some had been stopped. He asked Bevin for assurances that all demobilization would be stopped. Bevin replied that the matter was under review and “must be determined in a few days. Churchill inquired whether continued demobilization of any sort would not cause a "serious diminution of our modest military strength at this critical time.” Bevin did not answer directly. At one point Churchill said that the situation in Berlin is “very serious. as It might become one of life and death." Outward prosperity cannot create inward tranquillity.

Speed Limit Urged For Indiana Roads Additional State Troopers Sought Indianapolis, July 29 --(UP)— The Indiana traffic safety commission today recommended a 60 to 70 mile speed limit on Hoosier highways and more than double the present number of state troopers to enforce traffic laws. ‘The council recommended a 60-mlle-and-hour-llmit. but provided that police allow a 10 mile per hour variance in enforcement. In effect, raising the proposed limit to 70 miles-per-hour. A 60-mile day limit and a 50-mlie night limit had been proposed by Col. Robert Rossow. superintendent of state police. An earlier recommendation that the state's trooper force be increased to 500 men from the present 230 was ppproved again. The council also acted on a motor track accident, aimed at preventing mishaps such as the one which claimed the life of a young spectator at an Indianapolis midget race track Saturday night. The state fire marshal’s office absolved ti.e track of blame, but the safety commission recommended that tracks be made financially responsible for accidents Involving damage or injury to spectators. The recommendations will go to the governor’s traffic safety advisory commission, and will be presented to the 1949 general assent-, bly. executive secretary James D. Harrison said. Through With It Manhattan, Kan. (l?Pt— After 26 years, Mrs. H. C. Hlnrhcllff got her 820 back, hut not her purse, from the thief who took it in a Denver, Col., city park.
