Junior Legion Earns Split In Double Header Decatur's Junior Legion baseball team, lotting a tough extraInning battle to Post 82. Fort Wayne. Sunday afternoon at Worthman field, waa eliminated from any possible chance of winning the district tourney honor*. Decatur, after scoring an -easy 9-3 victory over Bluffton in the opener Sunday, watt handed a 3-2 defeat by Post 82 in the nightcap of the twin bill. It was Decatur's second loss in the district playoff, whil* the victory over Bluffton was the local team's second triumph Decatur previously having downed the Herne Juniors. Decatur had little troub'e in the opener Suntlav with Bluffton, piling up an 8-0 leail in the first four innings. Dave Glllig kept Bluff ton's five hits scattered except in the fifth, when they tallied all their runs on three hits, an error and a pair of fielder's choices. Itecatur obtained six of its seven hits in the second and third frames, when seven runs tallied. Gillig aided his own cause with two hits and a walk in three trips. A pair of errors proved Mick Ladd's downfall in the nightcap Post 82 came through with two hits in the eighth inning but two miscues permitted the winning run to score. The Fort Wayne team scored first in the opening inning but Decatur tied the score in the second on an error, walk and long fly. Post 82 tallied another run In the sixth, but Decatur came right back to even the score on Grant's triple and It Plumley's single. Wind Up This Week The Junior tagion wl'l wind up its season this week. The regular team will play at Bluffton Wednesday at 6 p m, with the team leaving here at 5:15; and will play at Berne Thursday at 5 p m„ leaving here at 4:30. Boston Red Sox Take Lead In American Loop New York, July 26 (UP)— There was a mathematical traffic jam in the American league stand Ings today with the top four clubs separated by only a game and a half, but the hit and run Red Sox threatened to drive ruthlessly J away from the snarl and on to the pennant. Winning their 12th straight game and their 15th in a 16-garne home stand. 3 to 0 from the Cleveland Indians yesterday, the Red Sox finally rose to the top. a far cry from the seventh place position ■ they occupied on June 5. They took ail three games from the Indians in the "showdown” series. Cleveland, which came to Boston in first place, left town in third place, only two percentage points ahead of the fourth place Yankees. Joe Dobson, who yielded but six hits, scored his 13th victory of the season, getting off to a 2 to (t lead on Hobby Doerr's triple in the first inning. Hern DiMaggio homered for the other Boston run. The Athletics, who enjoyed a one-day stay In first place, tumbled ■ out at Philadelphia when theTigers tamtarded four pitchers for a 10 to 2 triumph after losing the opener 4 to 0 as Joe Coleman won his 10th game. Brooklyn defeated the Pirates, 7 to 6 by rallying late after which' Pittsburgh won the second game. 7 to 4 when Danny Murtaugh hit a grand slam homer. Stan Rojek, who made eight hits in the double header and Ed Bockman also hit second game Pirate homers. Peewee Reese got one for Brooklyn with two abase. In the opener, the Brooks made four run* in the eighth with two out, Jackie Robinson stealing home with the win'ning run. The Red* defeated the Phillies. 11 to 8 and 9 to 2. Moose will play Cecil at Cecil Sunday, and Post 47 will meal Cecil at Dwenger park next Monday night at 8 o'clock to wind up the schedule. Decatur and Post 47 are presently engaged In a series to determine the fourth district's entry in thej American Legion tournament, and one of these teams will be forced! to drop out of the Federation lea gue playoff, as the .National Federation prohibits any team playing in any other tournaments or playoffs. [ SPORTS BULLETIN Philadelphia, July 26—(UP) —Eddie Sawyer was named manager of the Philadelphia Phillies today in a move which switched him from the Phils' Toronto International league farm to the parent club. The appointment was announced by president Robert Carpenter, who also listed other transfers and “promotions" in the Phils' farm system. Dick Porter, manager of Utica of the Eastern league this season, was named manager of the Toronto team, succeeding Sawyer.
