Polio At Epidemic Stage In Two Slates Cases Over Nation Higher Than 1947 New York. July 7 —(UP)— Infantile paralysis is raging again In two states and the number of cases for the nation is running 50 percent over 1947. Officials of the national founds- [ tlon for infantile paralysis were cautious today in making any pre-' dictions as to how serious the! polio season may he, but they! pointed to the figures which indicated that the disease already had reached the epidemic stage in Texas and North Carolina. In Texas, the latest figures showed 579 cases as compared to only 69 last year. In North Carolina. the figures showed 270 as against 21 last year. The situation was regarded as "not too good" in California where 281 had been reported as against 346 last year at this time. For the nation, the latest reports showed 2.007 cases. For the same period last year, there were 1.201 cases. In 1946—the nation's second worst polio year—there were 1.852 cases up to July 1. The 1946 total was about 25.000 cases, and in 1916- the worst year there were about 27,000 cases. Reports to the foundation here showed that few cases of Bulbar type polio have .struck. The Bulbar type affects the nerves leading from the brain and usually Is fatal, in some such cases the patient cannot swallow, and he "drowns in his own saliva.” Fort Wayne Pastor Here Next Sunday The Rev. Take a second look at your telephone bills this month as they truly have the “new look." As part of our modernization program, we have recently installed a billing machine which is the cause for the different appearance of our bills. We believe that it will give you a much neater and more legible bill, will allow us to have the bills out much earlier, and will greatly decrease the chance for error in the telephone bills. Your toll bills will be particularly changed in that the city called will no longer be listed. If it is necessary for you to have additional information concerning any of your longdistance calls, w’e will be happy to look up the particulars at the time of bill-payment.
