Messenger Admits Part In Robbery Confesses Story Os Holdup False St Louis, June 29—(UP)—Paul J. Lindy, 38, messenger for the Krey Packing Co. here who reported he was held up of cash and checks totaling 1670,740, today admitted implication in the robbery. Police Capt. John A. Buck said Lindy admitted his story of the holdup was false and implicated a taxicab company official, Joseph Costella, a* his associate. Costello, a former night cluh operator here, is a business associate of I#eo Brothers, notorious ex-convict. He was taken into custody, aboard a cabin cruiser on the Mississippi river and brought to the Penrose street police station where he witnessed Lindy's signed confession. Costello denied any part of the robbery. Lindy reported to police yesterday he was held up at 11th and Bremen street* *by two negroes who drove off with hl* satchel containing |B,O(Wi in cash and 8662.840 In company checks. The checks were recovered when the satchel was found half an hourlater on the highway between Venice and Lovejoy. 111., but the cash was not fund. Police began questioning Lindy when a witness told officers IJnday's auto was parked at the curb when another machine pulled alongside. Lindy got out. the witness said, walked over to the second car and passed the satchel to its occupants. The name of the witness was withheld. Police said at first that the satchel contained only 820.000 in <hecks but today reported the |662>40 figure. The checks included one for 1283,884 and another for 1200.000. Most of them, officers said, would have been impossible to cash. Lindy was on his way 10 the Bremen Bank A Trust Co. on North Broadway when the money was tak«-n. “I must have been crazy to fall for such a scheme," he told Buck after innking his confession He said he left the packing ‘ firm’s office with the money but instead of going to the hank parked the euto at 11th and Bremen ' where he was joined by Costello, driving another machine.
