Air Force Rushing Planes To Germany Will Help Shuttle Supplies To Berlin Washington. June 28—(UP) — The air force planned to begin flying some 39 big transport planes to Germany today to help shuttle supplies into Russianblockaded western Berlin. The planes, four-engine C-54 skymasters from Texas. Alaska i and the Caribbean, are being j rushed to Frankfurt at the urgent : request of Gen. Lucius D. Clay. American commander in Germany. The air force announcement said three squadron of C-54*«. j “approximately" 39 planes, would take off for Frankfurt as quickly as the planes can be readied for flight. Beginning today they will hop the Atlantic singly, in pairs or In larger groups as they are j put in shape. The air force said another ] squadron of about 13 C-54's will ; leave Hawaii for Westover Field. Mass. on a "training" flight, it ; was evident that this group also ' would be ready for a quick flight | to Germany at a moment's notice. Air force officials indicated , that more planes could lie sent if | Clay calls for them. But experts said the number that could lie 1 used for the vital food-supply job would be held down by the limited capacities of the western Alll°d airports in Berlin. The 39 C-54'a being flown across the Atlantic could haul an estimated 800 or more tons of supplies daily Into the city. Each plane is capable of carrying about seven . tons of cargo per trip. It was estimated they could make alwiut three round trips from Frankfurt to Berlin each day. The three squadrons will carry a total of 825 officers and men as operational and spare crews. They will remain In Germany "as i long as there is need for this mission.” the air force said. The Hawaiian "training” squadron will carry about 425 men. June 28—Indiana farmers saved a total of 3,447.000 spring pigs from 513,04)0 sows in 1948 according to a re|x>rt compiled by Purdue University and federal crop statisticians and released here today. This is an average of 6.72 pigs per litter which Is an increase over last year of .6 pigs per litter. This largely offsets a 10 percent reduction in sow numlters from last year. Centers ' Indiana University’s eight offcampus, which Includes the Fort Wayne center, increased isi enrollment during the past school year 22.7 percent over the- 1946-47 enrollment and 81 percent over that for 1945-46. Dean Norman a report an the off-campus centers shows that 2.742 students were en . rolled In the Fort Wayne center last year. The total enrollment for the centers last year was 15,261 students as compared with 12.440 for 194647 and 8.433 for 1945-46. A total of 1,850 classes were organized during the school year to meet the demands for off-campus work.
