4-H Beef Field Day Held Here Thursday Demonstrations Are Presented Thursday At the posture stop on the 4-11 j beef fb ld day Thursday. Lester i Sipe showed a well limed and fertilized field < ariying a luxuriant growth of ladino. alfalfa and brorne grass. This pasture has! been carrying 25 head of cattle for the pasture season. In contrast, an adjacent field in permanent i pasture carried a very scant growth and the livestock spent no ! time in this patch. In the discussion at ihe pasture demonstration, it was brought out that the hay crop this year is generally short, but that in all cases where hay fields were well limed and 4flfl pounds or more of fertilizer used on the nurse crop or applied to the young meadow that 'two tons or more of hay is in prospect; hay of good quality and i of higher feeding value. At the stop on the SM»e farm, three good 4-H beef calves were seen. The best one was gaining an average of 2 6 latunds per day Glen extension entyinol- ! ogist. joined the party here. Mr. Lehker assisted Henry Mayo in spraying a flock of sheep with D D. T. for the control of ticks and lice. The afternoon, was spent on the Henry Rumple farm. Here, a group of 411 calves were seen. Mr Ruinpie'a Angus breeding herd, fitting barn and 'eeding Imro were , nprayed with D. D. T. for the control of flies and lice. Mr. Mayo stated that careful studies have shown that beef cattle protected with D D T gain 50 pounds more during the pasture season than cattle not protected. Mr. Lehker said that increased milk produc- ' tions will Im- gained in dairy herds given D D. T. coverage. The day's events were closed with a hoof trimming demonstration bv Mr. Mayo, using the- stocks that Mr Rumple had made from plans furnished by Purdue. OVER 100 MISSING (f’ont.
