Browns Rookie Hurls Victory Over Yankees New York. June 9 tCPt Ac. cording to that well-known author,) Jxo Duneher. who also manages! the Brooklyn Dodgers, “nice guys finish last." but Zack Taylor and hi* battling Brown* from St. Louis were trying hard today to prove he is wrong Taylor* band of “new look" hail player* was consigned to the American league cellar long before the season began, and it is possible they may yet finish there, which will prove that Durocher is a prophet as well us an editorial whiz. But they aren’t going to lend at the bottom if hustle, a grand team spirit and some pretty good all-around ball playing will keep them higher. It is hard to get too enthusiastic about a club which has just ended a six-game losing streak, but even in defeat the Brownies didn't heat themselves. Ned Garver, a 23-year-<d»s lad from Ney, 0., kept his pitching wits about him yesterday and earned a hard fought. 5 to 3 victory over the Yankees lie was tagged for 11 hits including homers by Johnny Lindell and Phil Rizzuto. but when trouble threatened he bore down leaving 11 Yankees stranded on base Paul who drove in two runs with a homer and a scoring fly led the 12hit St. Louis attack. Catcher Les Moss got a double and two singles and Gerry Priddy, Whitey Platt, and Bingo Binks made two hits apiece as Garver won his second game The Senators belted Bob Gillespie out of the box last night for the second time in three days as they licked the White Sox. 7 to 1. The contest was abbreviated by a sudden thunderstorm which ’jroke loose in the seventh inning I but only after Ray Scarborough assured his fifth victory of the year. The Braves with Jim Russell putting on a personal hitting spree, defeated the Cubs. 9 to 5. at Chicago for their second straight victory there. June 8-(UP)—President Truman, assured of the “lUO percent" support of Idaho's 12 delegates to the Democratic national convention, headed into Montana today where party criticism of his tour threatened to inar his appearance at Butte tonight. The criticism stemmed from Mr 1 . Truman's refusal to permit local Democratic leaders to ride through their state on hir, special train, a traditional procedure with presi deatial candidates. The PresiJent's stand already has alienated the chairman of the Nebraska delegation to the national convention. And yesterday, lister H. Loble. Montana state Democratic chairman. joined in the criticism of Mr. Truman’s conduct of his western tour. Goble telegraphed chairman William Ritchie of Nebraska: "Treatment accorded your committee and lowa and Nebraska Democrats on accasion of President Truman's visit is the same as we are 'receiving. We are given no part in arrangements and have been advised that none of us will be permitted on President's train "The late President Roosevelt and other presidents have always wanted us to ride through the state on presidential train." Goble made it clear, however, that his stand did not change the decision of Montana's Democratic delegation to the convention. The delegation, which votes as a unit, promised several weeks ago to support Mr. Truman. Despite the growing revolt over treatment of party leaders. Mr Truman made it plain he was unwilling to permit them aboard his train. This rule was laid down in Washington before he left on the tour. At that time the western trip Was boomed as a "eon-poilti • If you are worrying about overdue bills, why not borrow the money from us to pay them. Cost of a loan very reasonable.
