As far as medical authorities can ascertain, cigarette smoking is not a cause for lung cancer. That satisfies most reporters and editorial writers who have the habit of lighting a fresh cigarette with every new paragraph. — o —--o President Truman hasn't received any direct word from Stalin since the summer of 1945. The Soviet premier knows where the White House Is and if he wants a friendly chat, all he need do is to drop in and see our chief executive. o o If you enjey fishing Just for the sport and the solitude that accompanies the moments when you're waiting for the finny tribe to bite, you need not go far from home to be awarded for your efforts. A local man caught more than 50 pounds of carp and chattel cat fish in a few hours of fishing in St. Mary's river, just a few "blocks from Main street. And knowing this man’s reputation for veracity, this isn't a fish story. o-—o-A far-from-wealtby American has just made an unusually significant good will gift to Great Britain, The American is Dr. Luther H. Evans, librarian of Congress. His gift Is the original manuscript ot tiie children's favorite, Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.” with the author's own illustrations. Evans bought it at auction a few years ago for 35<f.<*OS, of which all but BXBOO was later made up to him by popular subscription Now he has asked Lord Inverchapel. British ambassador to the United States, to take it home with him when he retires a few weeks from now.

If You Hove Hoy Fever

By Herman N. Bundesen, M. D. A I'KW sneezes and an itchy, watery nose for a couple of hour* each day are not enough to send the ordinary person to the doctor. This is the reason, experts say. that so few people seek medical attention early. Yet. these are the classic symptoms of a disorder which, though mild to start with, may and often does end with serious complications. It la known as allergic rhinitis or perennial hay fever, and la the moat common form of allergy or over-sensitivity affecttea the breathing passages In mild cases of allergic rhinitis, there may only be occasional attacks of sneezing. when the patient comes In contact with something to which he la sensitive. Sneezing once or twice is not abnormal, but six or seven sneezes in a row mean that there Is some allergy present In children with this disorder, the mother often mistakes tiwsymptoms for colds However when the attacks ar* due to allergy or oversenatlvity. there is no fev er, and the attacks, as a rule, last only a short time. Examination at the nose in al lergic cases shows that the lining membrane io pale and swollen, and that there is a great deal of watery discharge. The discharge often <ontates a kind of white blood cell known as the eosinophil. If the patient to sensitive to a number of different substances and has ctmtact with them the ivmptooM are more Mvern. There may he sneering throughout the

General MacArthur is not in-' dined to accept the Senate committee's invitation to return to the , United States and report on cont ditions in Japan and the Far East Indications are, that the supreme 1 commander of the Allied forces in I Tokyo, at least will not leave bis post in June, the date suggested t by the senators. On the face of . things, it appears the move to bring MacArthur home was more political than business and presumably the 67-year old com- . mander is not going to fall for it. . Unless officially ordered by the war department to report to cont gress. Mac Arthur is going to stick to his post. The country is grateful to him for doing a magnificant Job. <> o In 1900 tuberculosis claimed the ' greatest number of lives, the death per 100,000 from this dis--1 ease being 195. In 1946, this cause bad dropped to seventh place and deaths from heart disease ciimb- : ed to first place with a ratio of i 307 per 100,000. Cancer ranked : second, while fatalities from acciI dents and violence claimed the • third highest number of lives. Presumably the campaigns against tuberculosis, the work of the tuber culosis societies and services of hospitals established for the treatment of patients afflicted with the lung infection, have brought beneficial results. o O -- Hat In Ring: In 1944 Henry F. Schricker was elected governor of Indiana and his outstanding victory was the , fact that he was the only Demo < rat to come through the Republican sweep which took all other state offices, including that of I United States Senator. Two years later Mr. Schricker ran many thousand votes ahead lof other Demix-rat candidates in his unsuccessful race for the Senate. Now, the former popular governor, who gave Indiana one of I its best administrations, has acquiesced to th* appeal of friends and announces that he "will be available," if the delegates decide 1 to again nominate him for governor on the Democrat ticket. No man in public lite is better ' thought of than Henry F. Schrick- - er. His previous political vict tories attest to his popularity and • to the degree of respect in which i he is held by Hoosier voters. • Political writers predict that t Schricker will be nominated and r many Democrats believe that their • best chance of carrying the state r is with the former governor. i And with the Jenner-Lyons. • Helmke-Crelghton fight going on i in full blast, the Democrats should • have an even chance with Henry Schricker as their candidate.

'• day. the nose itches, and the nasal . passages are blocked, due to the. • swelling of the lining membrane. I This blocking is noticed most often - at night. • The more frequent the attacks I of allergic rhinitis, the greater the likelihood that some complicating ■ infection of the sinuses will occur, i After the disorder has been prei sent for a longer time, polyps, as a • rule, will develop. The treatment of allergic rhinitis ■ consists, of course, in making effort to find the substances tn which the patient is sensitive and then keeping out of contact with them. In some cases, once the substances are found. It may be pos- ' sible to desensitize the patient. 1 particularly in the ease of pollens c from plants, or house dust, by giv- ' iag injections under the skin of extracts from the substance, in gradually increasing doses. There are a number of preparations which may give temporary relief from the symptoms, such as epinephrine, aphedrln. amphetamine. benadryl and pyrlbenzamlne Os course, all such preparations must be used only under the directions of a physician. [ QUESTIONS ANO ANSWERS I R. N.r If the metabolism test is t 100 low. what does it mean? , Answer: As a general rule, low i metabolic rate Indicates a deficiency of thyroid secretion. Treatment with thyroid extract would be advisable in such a case, but It shculd of course be taken only under the direction of a physician
