This is the quarterly temperance lesson which protrays moral convictions with the courage to carry out those convictions. V.R. And Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile hithi.elf with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore, he requested of the prince of the ennuch that he might not defile himself." Daniel was faced with a great temptation, on the one side were the promise of promotion, the influence of the majority, the example of the king who drank wine, and the program of hl« superior officer; on the other hand were the religious teachings i.f his respect for his tribe, and a profound purpose to do right whatever the cost. A strong man has strong convictions V •' "Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with I the prince of the eunuchs." A truly; righteous man makes favorable impressions on others of whic.li he may unconscious. If every individual Christian would have profount, Christian convictions, and have the courage to live them, world conditions w >uld sm>n be changed. V.lo. Ann the |>;lnc’ of the eu<nuchs said unto Daniel. 1 fear the Ixird tny king, who hath appointed yoar nn-at and your drink; for why should he see your faces less liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endai -er my bead " The prince of the ennuemhs was a modern politician- he wanted to stand in with the government, right or wrong. In a land of freedom, the questions of right takes presedence with a true citizen. Vs 11.12. ‘'Then sayt Daniel to Melzar. whom the prince of the en1 nuchs had set over Daniel. Han- ! amah, and Azariah. Prove thy servants.! beseech thee, ten days; and 'give us pulse to eat, and waler to i drink ' Daniel Itelieved that if he and his companions would honor God that lie would honor them. child. It Is a good thing to make it one's practice to stand on God's' promises as one expression of our' honoring God V. 13. "Then let our countenances he looked upon before thee, and the countenances of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat; and as thou sees* deal with ' thy servants.” It is the results 1 that tell. It is our part to choose ' right: the results are with God ' and in them he reveals himself. Vl4 "So he consented to them In this matter, and proved them ten days." It is often surprising to see how those In authority give in to 1 those who have right convictions and stand by them. V 15. "And at th» end jf ten days their countenances appeared fairer ’ and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat a portion of the king's meat.” Whether God providentially Intervened, or whether • the result of the test was due to the difference of diet alone, can not lie determined. The results 1 allayed the fears of the prince. Righteousness pastilles itself. •' V.lB. Thus Melzar took away ’ that portion of their meat and wine I that they should drink and gave * them pulse." The influence of strong drink was outvoted by a 1 small minority who lielieved that < what was considered legally right « was morally wrong. V.IL "As for those four children,; God gave them knowledge and, 1 skill In all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams." Daniel at 1 tributed his wisdom to God. It is' written "The fear of the Lord is ( the beginning of wisdom." V. 18. "Thus Melzar took away days that the king had said he 'I should bring them in, then the prince of the enn'tchs brouglt them '' in before Sebuchadnerzer." Daniel 1 and his companions ?al had t. three years' cotir >e an, now earn* '• the day of graduating V 19. And the nr, communed, with them, and aui'Ag ail was found none like Danie>, Hananiaii. i Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they stood before the king.’’ ft is the "well done" when the testing days are over that counts. ( V2n. And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the “ king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the ( magician and astrologers that weio in his realm." Some day the righteousness of God's men and women will show the Lulled Nations the strong arm of God; let this lie our hope and our prayer.
