Five Badly Burned At Columbia City Home Is Partially Destroyed By Fire Columbia City, Ind.. May 25— <CP* Five persons were burned severely today in a flash fire that partially destroyed their home, Police said Mrs. Ewell Honeycut. 45. attempted to use kerosene while starting a fire in a kitchen stove. The fluid setting the kitchen on fire. The woman was rescued by her husband, who wrapped her in blankets and smothered the fire that was burning her clothes. The husband suffered minor bums. Also burned were a son. Clayton. 2*.’; a daughter and son-in law, Mr. and Mrs. James Panos, and their seven weeks-old baby. Elise. The injured were treated at Memorial hospital here. Injures Children, Commits Suicide 40-Year-Old Negro Goes Berserk Today
Chicago, May 25 I UP)—A 40-1 year-old negro went berserk early today and <ritl<ally injured his three children with a hammer before he committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a suburban train. Quintew Malone's mangled body was found by police shortly after his hysteric al wife rushed out of their apartment c alling for help. Mrs. Fannie .Malone, 35. told otficers she awakened this morning to hear the three children screaming She said her husband was "beating them with a claw hammer." She said she thought he would kill them first and then attack her. so she ran for help. When the police arrived, the children were alt unconscious and Malone was tntssing The children. Norman, 10. Irvin, 9. and Arthur. 5. wore rushed to a hoapital where they were reported in a critical condition with skull fractures. Police said .Malone had been released from a mental hospital last month He left a note saying he was sorry thia bad to happen but he thought It "was the easiest way < ut ” Malone’s body was found on the Illinois Central suburban railroad tracks. Elwood Mother Aids Eloping Daughter Also Pledges Help To School Teacher Syracuse. N. Y.. May 25— (UPI —Mrs. Mary Carpenter. 3H. Elwood. Ind., said today she would ■•give whatever aid" she could to her former public speaking teach er who is accused of violating the Mann act by transporting her Ikyear-old daughter across state lines. The daughter, pretty Verna Jean Parrlll. a student at Elwood high school, and Donald M. Brown. 44-year-old high school instructor and father of four children. were taken into custody by FBI and Ithaca police last week. Mrs. Carpenter arrived here yesterday. She indicated that she •'might" provide the 95,000 bail for Brown and the 11.000 bail for her daughter. Rhe said she believed Brown, one of the school's most popular teachers, had "erred in judgment" and that he had not meant any harm to her daughter Brown and Miss Parrlll were posing as husltand and wife when they were found in Ithaca. Brown was working In a store. Mrs. Carpenter said she planned to confer with V. S. attorney Irving Higbee to “see just what I can do for Brown " She described him as fl "brilliant fellow" and a "fine type of person." Mrs. Carpenter was one of Brown's pupils when she attended high school. Miss Parrlll. her mother said, was an outstanding student in high school. Just what aid she could give the couple, Mrs. Carpenter said, she didn't know.
