Democrats Select District Officers Springer Reelected State GOP Chairman Indianapolis, .May 13—(UPl — Pleas E. Greenlee’s position as chairman of the Indiana Democratic state committee beyond next Saturday's reorganization meeting appeared secure today. It appeared on the basis of district reorganization meeting results that Greenlee would be reelected with a* much ease as was state Republican chairman fl. Clark Springer. Springer and his three colleague* in the GOP offi< Jal family were kept in their Clayipoo) offices without outward evidence of opposition yesterday. While the Republicans organized on a state level, the Democrats were meeting in district sessions. The turnover of the 22-member Democratic state committee was twice as great as the shift in personnel of the GOP state commitI tee. But Greenlee apparently : didn't lose any support in the process. In at least one district. I the new chairman was a stronger i Greenlee supporter than the old ■ hairman. Four of the 11 district chairmen land four of the 11 district vicei i hairmen elected by the Demolt rats were new. This turnover of eight compared with four in the GOP committee. The Ni.RB ruled the union out of the balloting because it* officials have not signed the non-Communlkt affidavits required by theTaft-Hartley act. However, none of the three unions that competed in the election was able to poll the majority necessary to win the right to represent the workers. A total of in.*46 workers cast ballot* In the election. They gave 4.707 to the AFL united worker*. 2.085 to the CIO united auto worker* and 1.170 to the International association nf machinists (INDI. - The NLRB said a run-off election would be held between the VAW AFL and the L’AW CIO In a week to 10 day* Another 2.112 workers voted for “no unions" as urged by the farm equipment worker* In an attempt to- prevtnt any of the other threw from winning the neueaaary majority. By that strategy the union hoped to continue the strike and eventually regain its strength at (he ptant The campaign sauteedsd but union leaders apparently decided to eall the strike c«f anyway to prevent further loss of prestige <o
the organization and further hardship to members In the face of certain defeat in the run-off election. Steven Jones, president of the FEW local, went on radio station W.MBD shortly btfore midnight and announced that the strike was over. He thanked union members for their support in conducting the strike which began exactly - five weeks ago today. The strike s was called to enforce demands for r higher wages. t Member* of the union entered ? the plant today along with those who voted for other organizations. Yesterday's balloting was quiet i- despite -previous intensive cam- » jiaigning by the rival union*. The , only incident came when pickets . roughed a newsman.
