May 10 — (UPI — The i Italian parliament failed to elect a new president of Italy on the first ballot today, but Foreign Minister Count Carlo Sforza ap p< are.i assured of ultimate victory. The joint session of the senate and the chamber of deputies released for five-hours after taking the first ballot, in which Sforza trailed Provisional President Enrico De Nicola by a sma'l margin Balloting was to he restlmed this evening Sforza. 76-year-old. whitegoated aristoerat. who spent 18 years In exile fighting Mussolini's fascist regime, was the choice of Premier Ab ide De Gasp< ri ami his Christian Demmratlc party. Which holds nearly half of all seats in parliament. On the first ballot. Sforza was given 353 votes, while De Nicola got 396. Forty-eight votes were split among six others, none of whom had a chance. Fifteen members abstained anil 56 ballots were left blank among the 868 senators and deputies who voted. The heavy vote fbr De Nicola appeared to have le-en given as a token of respect to the provisional president, who never had sought to head the new govern ment. It was Iw-lieved that the bulk of his support would go to Sforza later in the voting, perhaps on the second ballot.
