Southern Democrat Leaders In Confab Conference Opened On 'States' Rights' Jackson. Miss.. May 10-(UP>— Hundreds of southern Democratic b-ader* gathered here today for a "state's rights” conference expected to produce the first concerted plans for blocking President Truman'S nomination because of his civil rights program. The meeting convene* at 10 a m. CST today, and about 1,500 “delegates” are expected here by that time. Gov Fielding L. Wright of Mississippi. who will act as temporary chairman, said the first business would consist of electing a permanent chairman and secretary and appointing committees. Then Gov. J. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina will deliver the keynote address. Thurmond ha* been endorsed by the Mississippi Democratic executive committee as their choice for the Democratic presidential nomination. None of the 1.-ading delegates would predict bow far the conference might go in condemning Mr Truman and planning for his defeat because of hi* sweeping program which southerners feel would wreck many racial barrier* in dixie. Gov. Wright said last night that ‘ the most important thing facing us is to see that we elect a president of the l'nlt"d States who will be in favor of states' rights. “It remains to be seen whether we will desert Mr Truman or elect a Republican." he said. Some delegates believed the meeting would go no further than passing a "strongly worded resolution” urging southern states to withhold their convention votes or electoral votes from Mr. Truman. But there was one report, unconfirmed by any leader, that the states' rights Democrats wonM launch a fund-raising campaign for |2,st*«.<mo to fight the president's nomination and 'or election. And other* believed the conference might actually turn into an unofficial “Dixie convention” which would "nominate" a southern presidential candidate to offer at the July Philadelphia national convention in lieu of Mr. Truman Veteran V. For the Information of the All Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger and Freight Train Service Will Be Discontinued in Event of Strike of Enginemen and Firemen, Tuesday, May 11 ■ f The Pennsylvania Railroad announces that it will be unable to operate any train service in the event the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemcn carry out their announced intention to strike at 6 A. M., Standard Time, Tuesday, May 11. All train service, including passenger, mail, express, baggage and freight will cease. The management realizes that complete cessation of train service will result in untold hardship to travelers, commuters, shippers and the general public, but it has no alternative under the circumstances. I ✓ * • Up to the time of strike, the Pennsylvania Railroad will continue the sale of tickets and reservations, subject to , the cancellation of trains. If the strike goes into effect, ticket sales and future reservations will be discontinued until further notice. No assurance can be given that trains en route at time of strike will complete their scheduled runs. Says Arrest Made At His Own Home James Fry near Monroe, who pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct in Mayor .John M. Doan's court, stated that he was arrested at his own home. Fry admitted that he had been drinking and that he visited a neighbor's home, but did not molest anyone. a» Inferred from the testimony in the case.
