The beginning of a great revival war in the heart of Ezra who yearned for better Israel; the work of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem having been finished had a good effect upon Israel in wanting somethin* more than the ma- , terlal V I. "And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they s|>ake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the Isiok of the law of Moses, which the lx>rd had commanded to Israel." A wave of religious conviction swept over the people so that petty differences melted away as they sought to know the truth as one hotly: harmony and the spirit of unity Is essential to a revival of religion V. 2. And Ezra the prieet brought t the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding. upon the first day of the Nev-1 i nth month.” In a revival there is a call for the Word of God to know what God has to say; note all classes and ages came: God hus a message for every one. V. 3. "And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning til ! midday, before the men and the i woman, and those that tould understand and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law " Ezra must have read well for the people listened well; here is another step in a religious revival. V. 5. \nd Ezra opened the book, In the sight of alt the people; (for he was above all thr people;) and when he opened it all the people stood Up." It is the open book that counts with the Bible; Many have Bible* but they remained closed Ezra as a spokesman of God I stood high enough above the crowd Ito he seen and heard The radio lis not enough to get the church ! service: one wants to see the speaker, to hear him with ears and eyes A genuine revival will not he conducted by means of the radio: God's church must be honor-
Oup Preacher *2l J# One of the great moments in my life was the morning when I left home to attend country school, j Mother followed me to the gate where with trembling voice and tear-stained eyes, she laid her hand on my head saying, "Davie, remember that God seo you." Those words hnve followed me to this day Many times when II , have been tempted and sorely tried. those Word* have made the fact of find very real to me. My mother taught me that God I* not a policeman hut a loving Father who sees me. a fact that constrained tne 10l please Him. Thank* for a good’ mother.

ed The people standing Indicated the reverence they had for the word To them the word read was the same as God speaking. V. 6. "Aud Ezra blessed the laird, | the great God. And all the people answered. Amen. Amen, with liftI ing up their hands: and they bowed their heads and worshipped." Note the three things; the minis ter praising God. the peoples’ heart response, and all together worshipping the Lord in deep humility. V.B. "So they read In the book in ' the law of God distinctly, and Rave the sense, and caused them ■lto understand." Expository preselling counts most. A good Bible student wants to know what each verse means for only in this way will people understand the scripture*. Ezra was assisted by helper* who after his exposition proceed- ' cd to relay his message by groups. V. 28. "And the rest of the people ' the priests, the Levitoa, the singers, the Nethinims. and al! they that had separated themselves from the peoples of lands unto the law of the God. their wives and their sons and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding." The preceding verses gives the names of those who elgned a covenant the list being concluded in this verse. It is good for man to make covenants to God who has given so many ; promises. V. 28. 'They clave to their brethren. their nobles, and entered Into a < urse. and into an oath, to walk In God's law which was given by Moses the servant of God; and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our lx»rd, .and hie Judgments and his sta-i . lutes' Obedience to the word and I the will of God is the only sei ur-. ity about which the holy scriptures speak. The words, "curse" and "oath simply means that the peop le solemnly pledged themselves io obey. V.3u. ‘And that we would not; give our daughters unto the people of the land, nor take their daugh ters for their sone." Intermarriage with the ungodly would not be tolerated V. 31. "And if the people of the land bring ware or any victual* on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the’ sahbeth. or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year and exaction of every debt.” Strict observance of the sablieth day was assured. In addition they would make free will offering* besides the giving of their tithes.
Clerious Soys: Clericu* says; "The 4>>ui can never I* happy without God. and j no manifestation of modern power can suppress in our souls the everlading longing which we have for his spirit. St. Augustine expressed our thought when he said, "Thon hast fashioned u* for thyself. O God. and our souls are restless till they find their rest in thee." 0 Lesson Prayer Les*an Prayer: Forgive jis for our lack of interest In thy Word: grant to give us a greater desire to know thy Word and to give heed to it* taaching and to verify it* pre cepis by putting its teaching* to work hi our own live* and in the lives of others. 0 Book Review Though** To Live By. by J.
