Meal Strike Costly 1 To All Concerned 11 I Nationwide Strike Ending Sixth Week Chicago, Ajril 26 -fUPt The nationwide .-neat packing strike, I ending its sixth week today, has I hurt not only the packers and i strikers, but fanners and house- : wives as well. The strike has cut off the wages lof about 100,000 members of the I CIO t'nited Packinghouse WorkI era. It has curtailed the operations I and income of the nation's four ! biggest packers and several other i large companies. it has cut the supply of meat and has helped boost prices at retail butcher counters. It has cost cattle ami hog raisers hundreds of thousands of dollars The strikers, themselves, probably have suffered the most. The union has been unable to pay strike wages during the prolonged walkout, and in most states the strikers get no unemployment compensation from the state. They have been forced to rely on donations made by various organizations, welfare groups and other unions. "Things are gt-.iing pretty I tough." a spokesman for the union ' said. Each district of the union has a ' fund raising committee, and each j local union has a welfare commit 1 tee to which needy strikers go for i Help The union also has set up soup kitchens to feed the strikers.
