Illinois Woman Is 'Mother Os Year' Springfield Woman Is Congratulated Springfield. HI.. Apr. 21—(I'P) —A small, white shingle bungalow on the outskirts of town was as busy today as if the occupants had won the giant jackpot ot all quiz shows. For Inside, a queenly woman of 61 was receiving congratulations from the nation, her husband, and her in children for having been named "American Mother of the Year" yesterday. Mrs. Il>-len Gartslde Hines, a runner-up for the honor in 1946. took the congratulations calmly, sandwiching the reporters, the newsreel men. her friends, and the "thousand-and-one" calls into her regular duties as a housewife and mother. The newly-crowned "Mother of the Year’ was chosen by the Golden Hu'e Foundation from >1 candidates, one from each of the states and three "extras." Mrs Hines was one of the extra candiI dates.
