Although most roads planned to maintain full service on main lines with diesel equipment, they ordered sharp cutbacks in local and commuter service. The New York Central, will discontinue 169 runs beginning Monday. The Long Island railroad will halt 62 trains at the same time, while the New Haven & Hartford will make a 7.5 percent cut in its main line electrified service. In the midwest, the Illinois Central discontinued 16 trains. The Burlington line will cut 14 trains beginning Monday. The Pennsylvania railroad said five of its freight runs would be stopped because of the coal strike. It said its passenger service also would be curtailed. Railroad spokesmen said passenger service on main lines would not be affected seriously because of a seasonal drop in passenger traffic. 0 ALLOCATE RIDES (Cont.
