MR. AND MRS. SEPHUS MELCHI TO OBSERVE ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Sephus Melchi, well known Decatur residents, will observe their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary Sunday with open house for their many relatives and friends from two to four o’clock at the home of a son, Russell Melchi, 412 Closs street. A dinner for the immediate family will precede the reception. Mr. and Mrs. Melchi were married on March 19, 1893, and have five children: Mrs. Floyd Death, Mrs. Hubert Cochran, Russell Melchi and Cecil Melchi, Decatur, and Harold Melchi, of Portland; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mr. Melchi has been a law enforcement officer in Decatur and Adams county for thirty-seven years. He began his long and enviable record in 1911 when he joined the city police force. He served as chief of police under mayors Huber M. DeVoss, George Krick and Arthur Holthouse. In January, 1912. he began two terms as sheriff, returning to the city force, where he is stiiT actively employed. Mrs. Melchi, who has been in ill health for several years, is seventythree years of age, and Mr. Melchi is seventy-six. FAREWELL PARTY GIVEN RECENTLY Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bienz and son were the honored guests at a recent farewell supper given them by a number of relatives and friends. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bienz and„son, Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Myer and sons, Mrs. Katie Wintrow, Mr.<and Mrs. Omer Merriman and family, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Meyer, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burkhart and family, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Foreman and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Kelsey and family, Mr. and Mns. Clair Carver and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Bryan and family, Mr. and Mrs. Austin Merriman, Elisha Merriman and family, Mrs. Lawrence Carver, Mrs. Vivian Taylor and children, Mrs. Oscar Young and son, Miss Pauline Roe and Miss Shirley Fox and Jerry Neadstine. Accordian music was furnished by Gloria Merriman and games and contents were enjoyed. The Bienz family was presented with a lovely gift. METHODIST YOUTH FELLOWSHIP MEETS A lovely St. Patrick’s party was enjoyed recently by thirty nine members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship in the basement of the church. Miss Elizabeth Haines and Ray Lehman were in charge of the recreation period, and Francis Morris, Jim Pollock and Ann Deitsch were the committee in charge of refreshments. Med Smith was general chairman. This group of young high school people have averaged over thirty in attendance at the evening discussion group meetings since its organization in November. Jay Barnett is president of the group and Mrs. M. O. Lester is the adult sponsor. MISS ETTA ANSPAUGH HONORED AT SHOWER Miss Etta Anspaugh, bride-elect of March 21, was the honored guest at a miscellaneous shower recently given recently by Mrs Clement Snell of this Miss Irene Beer and Mrs. Ralph Beer, of Berne, and Mrs. Ced Colchin. of Sturgis, Mich., at the former’s home on Jefferson street. Dessert was served at the beginning of the evening at small tables, centered with miniature bridesmaids in pastel shades of pink, yellow, lavender and green. Various games were then played and prizes awarded to Mrs. Elmer Anspaugh, Miss Clarice Anspaugh and Miss Barbara Anspaugh, who in turn presented them' to the honored guest. Miss Anspaugh was also the recipient of many lovely gifts and was presented with a corsage of roses by the hostesses. The gift table was cleverly decorated with a small umbrella, un-

BAPTIST MEN’S CLUB IN MEETING The men’s brotherhood of the First Baptist church held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening. At six thirty, a banquet was served at long tables, decorated with pink and yellow tapers surrounded with greenery and Easter eggs. The banquet was served by the women of the Philo Class. The Rev. O. B. Turner, of the Pleasant View Baptist church in Wren, 0., was the guest speaker, using as his topic “Giving God Our Best.” Twenty members were in attendance at the meeting. MRS. FOREST ELZEY HOSTESS TO CLUB The Decatur Garden club met at the home of Mrs. Forest Elzey recently, with Mrs. Mae Butler and Mrs. Enez Miller assisting. Twenty one members were in attendance. The business meeting was conducted by the president, Mrs. Russell Acker, at which time a letter was read from the Adams county cancer society urging at) members to attend a lecture to be given by Dr. S. M. Rabson, of Fort Wayne, on March 30 at the Decatur high school auditorium. Five dollars was also donated to the Red Cross. At the close of the business meeting, Miss Etta Mallonee was welcomed into the club as a new member.
Lovely refreshments were served oy the hostesses and games, and contests were then enjoyed. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Dean Byerly. JUNIOR ROUND UP TO BE HELD IN BERNE The following program has been announced for the Adams county junior round-up to be held at the Church of the Nazarene in Berne Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. PSI IOTA XI SORORITY CONDUCTS PLEDGE SERVICES Impressive pledge services were conducted at the Elks home last evening by Alpha Delta chapter of Psi lota Xi sorority for Mrs. Russell Coleman and Mrs. Bill Melchi. Floral decorations in the room were in yellow and blue in keeping with the sorority’s colors. A floral centerpiece wa«s also used on the long refreshment table, lighted with tall white tapers in crystal candelabra. Mrs. Eugene Durkin, president, ■presided at the table. WILLING WORKERS CLASS IN MEETING The regular meeting of the Pleasant Mills Methodist Willing Workers class was held Tuesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Price. The meeting was opened with the group singing “Sweet Hour of Prayer,” followed by the devotions, the fourth chapter of Luke, read by Mrs. Lester Fisher. Prayer whs offered by Mrs. Murray Holloway. During the social hour, contests were enjoyed and lovely refreshments were served by the hostess. The April meeting will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bauman. Those attending the meeting were Mr. and Mrs. John Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Ehrsam, Mr. and Mrs. Murray Holloway, Mrs. Fred Bauman, Mrs. Clyde Jones, Mrs. Richaid Speakman, Mrs. Harlen Jones, Mrs. Leland Ray, and Mrs. Lester Fisher. KUM JOIN US CLASS MEETING IS HELD The Kum Join Us class of the Bethany Evangelical United Brethren church held its annual birthday party Tuesday evening at the church. A delicious carry-in supper was enjoyed by the thirty two members and ten children in attendance. The four tables were beautifully decorated in keeping with the four seasons of the year, with a huge birthday cake dominating the decorations. The devotional period, in keeping with the Easter- theme, was in charge of Raymond Eichenauer. The president, Everett Hutker, conducted the business meeting, at which time each member responded to the roll call by singing an Irish melody. Clever games and contests were enjoyed, following which movies were shown by Mr. Hutker of the class Christmas party, the men’s club outing and scenes from a trip to the Smoky mountains. The class officers were in charge of the meeting.
LADIES SHAKESPEARE CLUB IN MEETING Mrs. Fred Smith was hostess to the Ladies Shakespeare club Wednesday afternoon. There were sixteen members present and roll call was answered with current events. The program for the afternoon was prepared by Mrs. Dan Tyndall and presented by Mrs. Walter Krick and Mrs. Smith. The poem “A Little Bit of Heaven” was read by Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Krick sang the well-known songs, “The Minstrel Boy,” “Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms” and “The Last Rose of Summer,” all composed by the famous Irish poet, Thomas Moore. An interesting paper. “Irish Melodies and Legends,” was read by Mrs. Krick, telling of the many legends associated with St. Patrick’s day and the music of Ireland. St. Patrick was born in England in the year 389 and was taken to Ireland as a slave when a boy. He later escaped to France and became a monk, returning to Ireland as a missionary, where he died March, 17, 461. Mrs. Krick concluded the program by singing "Love’s Old Sweet Song,” “An Irish Love Song” and “The Wearing of the Green.” During the social hour, lovely refreshments in keeping with the day

GENEVA SENIORS TO GIVE PLAY FRIDAY The Geneva high school seniors will present the play “The Whole Truth” in the high school auditorium Friday evening at seven thirty o’clock. The cast includes Duane Shoemaker, Jane VanEmon, Bill Kamman, Norma Wright, Esther Stucky, Max Mattax, Walter Bailley, Barbara Robinson, David Shepherd, Mary Lou Hofstetter, Bill Pyle and Phyllis Hofstetter. Reserved tickets are selling for fifty cents, adults, forty cents, and children, thirty cents. Tickets may be purchased from any member of the senior class at the door Friday evening. The Aeolian choir will have rehearsal this evening at seven thirty o’clock in the music room of the junior-senior high school. A meeting of the Church Mothers Study club will be held at the home of Mrs. Burdette Custer Tuesday evening at eight o’clock. The Root Township Home Economics club will meet Tuesday afternoon at one thirty o’clock at the home of Mrs. Augustus Bohnke. An interesting lesson is being prepared by the leaders and al! members are urged to attend.

Fund-Raising Appeal For Salvation Army Berne, March 18—The 1948 fundraising appeal in Adams county for the Salvation Army will begin Monday. The county goal is $2,50’0 and Brice Bauserman, Berne banker, is county chairman. Assisting Bauserman are Lavon Mattox, Geneva chairman; Glen Stucky, Monroe chairman and Carl Weksler, representative of the Salvation Army.
