Anderson Five Underdogs In State Finals I BY KURT FREUDENTHAL (United Press Sports Writer) Indianapolis, March 17 —(UP) Anderson's Indians are moving into the state finals this year with two big advantages: they have already played four games on the big Butler fieldhouse floor and they are the underdogs. Shelbyville's Golden Bears, it has been recalled, were in the same position last year and by the time the night game rolled around they were as accustomed to the spacious fieldhouse as to their own backyard. Os course, Anderson isn’t as gifted as Shelby was then. But nevertheless, the Tribe has shown throughout the tourney that a darkhorse cannot be ignored in championship play. As 11-game losers during the regular season they are indeed the underdogs, despite those hair-rais-ing one-point victories over touted Madison and Lawrenceburg in last week's semi-finals. Anderson is traditionally a strong tourney club. It has been in the four-team finals no less. than 10 times—more than any other club. Its last great team went all the way just two years ago and was sparked by the un-j forgettable Johnny Wilson. This year’s edition of the Tribe is without a player who outshines the others in brilliance. Their teamwork, accuracy from the free throw line and never-say-die spirit i are as responsible for their tourney success as their morale is high. Dick Peck. Anderson’s six-foot-two center and forward Ray Ward

are the only seniors on the squad which includes five juniors and three sophomores on the 10-man roster. Translated into future dope, this would indicate that next year's Anderson quintet will be more experienced and much rougher than it is this year. Coach Keith Lambert, a member of Anderson's 1935 championship outfit, took over the coaching , -P - --m ~t— iii in - --7-1 Tonight & Thursday 0 (1 OUR BIG DAYS’ First Show Tonight 6:30 Continuous Thur, from 1:30 BE SURE TO ATTEND! e c iill ins li’ i IwSh: I ifr— ■ J • < ■ ’ Aw *•' i •* WAYNE J? chores there after Charles Cummings piloted the Tribe to the 1946 title. He can field a club standing six foot or better. Gene Wilson, brother of “Jumpin’ Johnny," and Russ Smith, two fine negro players, assist Peck in the rebound work and carry their share of the offensive burden as well. Bob Rousey, who got off a sickbed last week to contribute 11 in- ! valuable points to the Indians’ cause, and Dan Schuyler are other capable performers. Anderson will meet the Lafayette Broncos in the second afternoon game this Saturday and will be shooting to avenge a 46-27 defeat at the hands of the Jeffmen during the season. That's a man-size assignment. But judging from the way Anderson has galloped through the tourney so far. by a two-pointer, three one-pointers and a four-pointer, they're no pushover for any team.
