Inhaling Penicillin Dust
By Herman N. Bundesen, M. D. THE usefulness of penicillin is being constantly extended, especially when it conies, to infections of the nose, throat, windpipe, and lungs. I have written earlier of the way in which such patients can be treated, simply by having them breathe penicillin in the form of a fine mist. This is known as the aerosol treatment. More recently it has been found that penicillin can also be inhaled in the form of dust which, in some cases, js even more effective than the mist. By this dust method, the penicillin dust reaches every part of the respiratory tract and is evenly absorbed by all. No reactions were noted in 64 patients treated in this way. This dust containing the penicillin was inhaled for twenty minutes three times a day. For three-fnurths of the patients with upper respiratory disease, such as colds and sore throats one treatment was sufficient. I In cases of chronic bronchitis or chronic sinus infections, as many as eighteen treatments were necessary. Infection in the windpipe and lungs required ten to eighteen treatments. A special apparatus is required for administering the penicillin dust. This consists of a facepiece which fits over the mouth and nose, and which is connected with a chamber containing the dust. There are valves which open and close as the patted breathet i» and out. fiy means of ah air inlet on top of the facepiece, the amount
not hate, because of race. The world would solve most of its troubles if the people lived as . brothers, in the sense explained in j the Holy Book. o o Henry Wallace wants his own i Marshall plan and is no piker in setting the cost at 50 billion dol- : lars, all of which would have to be paid by the United States. Then, he would dish it out to countries held under the iron heel of Russia. 0 o Evidently the country doesn’t like the five-dollar a-ton boost in the price of steel. Just when commodity markets seemed to start the downward trend, the steel boost hits an unpopular chord. | President Truman has ordered an | investigation of the industry and the FBI is undertaking the job to see if anti-trust laws have been violated. o o Democrats will gather in Indianapolis on Saturday for the Jef-ferson-Jackson Centennial dinner. Senator J. Howard McGrath of Rhode Island and Democrat National Chairman, will be the principal speaker. The party will be one of the largest ever held in the state, the attendance of ChairMcGrath bringing many prominent state and national leaders to the event. o o— — The fact that the second candidate for the Democrat nomination for congress in the Fourth district has already announced, is an indication that the Democrats have a good chance of winning in November. E. H. Kruse, Jr., a 30-year old Fort Wayne attorney, with an outstanding record of service officer in the navy, has thrown his hat into the ring. Kruse is a
I member of a prominent Fort Wayne family, long associated with the Democrat party. •——O 0 Little Czechoslovakia, the country thaf was first overrun by Hitler's hordes, now falls to the Communists. Stalin and his crowd moved in and local government is being administered by the iron hand of the Reds. Unless the United States wants to go to war with Russia, there isn’t much that can be done to free the Czechs. The world wonders what will become of President Eduard Benes, the Czech leader, who gallantly fought for his country’s freedom. Back in 1914, when Kaiser Wilheltn’s troops invaded Belgium, the United States was inflamed and sentiment soon crystalized here against Germany. What will Russia's invasion of the little countries bring? Will the Soviets now move to Greece and later to Turkey, or will the drive be made in the direction of France and Italy,
of penicillin dust inhaled can be regulated, and it is made possible for the patient to breathe easily. When penicillin is used in this way, not only does it come in direct contact with the affected tissues, but, in addition, it is rapidly absorbed into the blood. Within three hours a goodly amount has entered the blood. Os course, the blood carries it to all parts of the body. When penicillin was first discovered, it was given only by injection into either a muscle or a vein. Because it was so quickly eliminated from the body, injections had to be given frequently—every three or four hours right around the clock. This meant that it ' could only be used when the patient was in the hospital or under 1 the care of a trained nurse at ' home. Later on. preparations of peni- . cillin were made which were effective when taken by mouth. How- , ever, this method required a great r deal more* penicillin for successful . treatment as when Injections were I used. Still later it was found that i solutions of pencillin in oil, when injected into a muscle, were abI seabed so slowly that only one dbse j a day might suffice tor some condi- , tions. I Then'came penicillin mist, and i now we have this new method for . the administration of penicillin in I dust form, which promises to be i the most useful of al! iu many iufictions of the nose, throat and lungs.

a police station at Hong Duk Gun in Cholla Putka Province. U. S. authorities said their information on the demonstrations was based mainly on Korean police reports. U. S. army officers said the disturbances were sponsored by the south Korea labor party, a Com-munist-controlled coalition, and were “definitely coordinated." Forty-seven persons were killed in riots earlier this month when demonstrators staged a campaign against the United Nations commission on Korea. The riots, from Feb 7 to Feb. 10, were said by Lt. Gen. John R. Hodge, American commander in Korea, to have been staged by north Koreans from the Soviet-occupied zone. 0 MINNEAPOLIS (Continued from D pupil, retained Nelson to seek an end to the strike which the teachers began Tuesday to enforce their
demands for higher wages. The strike closed the city’s 92 grade, secondary and vocational schools and left 75,000 students without educational facilities. The teachers have asked that minimum salaries be boosted from $2,000 to $3,000 annually and that top salaries be hiked from $4,200 to $6,000. They also asked the board to abandon its plan to lop four weeks off the school year. The complaint signed by Mrs. Jensen contends that the strike interferes with government processes and her rights as a taxpayer to have her child educated by the city. 0 CONDEMN (Continued from Page 1) Exporta to the country might be cut off and her credit cut.
