W. Guy Brown, Decatud jun-ior-senior high school principal, te vested with the authority to enforce these rules. Regulations are practically identical this year with those in force in previous years. Each team may play 10 men during the tourney. Twelve players are certified by each school, but two of these names must be scratched before the first game of the tournament. Admission will be $2 for a season ticket and 60 cents for a single session ticket. Standing room shall not be sold or used, and requirements of the city and state fire marshals are to be met. No prizes of any kind are to be awarded to any individual or school from any source. Settlement from tourney receipts are to be made in the following manner. 1. All legitimate expenses, such as revenue tax, meals, officials, etc., except for transportation and lodging shall be paid from the gross receipts, if sufficient. In event the gross receipts are not sufficient, which is considered highly improbable here, the obligation would fall to the center principal. 2. Decatur junior-senior high school, as the center school, shall receive $1.50. 3. The transportation shall be paid. Three cents per mile per man for the roundtrip will be allowed. Mileage is to be considered ae the most direct distance between the school building and the local gymnasium where the tourney will be held. 4. The lodging shall be paid. 5. The Decatur junior-senior high as the center high school, shall receive SIOO. 6. The IHSAA shall receive one percent of the fifth balance. 7. One-half of the sixth balance shall be divided pro-rata among the participating school, with Decatur junior-senior high sharing. 8. One-half of the sixth balance is to be divided on the baste of season ticket sales in the respective communities on or before Thursday at 5 p.m. Season tickets sold after this hour will not be counted in the finding of the share of any school. 9. The board of control will pass on all reports, made by Mr. Brown and the other center principals and all reports by the participating schools. 10. The center school, which is . Decatur, is to furnish a complete financial report to the IHSAA and to each participating school soon after the tourney. 1 There were 2,000 season tickets placed on sale for the Decatur tour- • ney, with all sold in advanc<. 3ach of the 10 schools was allotted 20 tickets on a pro-rata basis, the balance according to enrollment.

Manager '•& w W. Guy Brown, principal of the Decatur junior-senior high school, is manager for the Decatur sectional tournament. Only Four Os - County Teams Hold Crowns Decatur Is Host To Sectional Tourney Ninth Year In Row Four Adams county teams have won sectional tournament honors in the eight consecutive years the meet has been held in the gymnasium of the Decatur junior-sen-ior high school. And, by strange coincidence, these four teams have each won two titles, with six of the county’s 10 teams yet to taste a sectional crown in these later years, Since the construction of the new Decatur high school. The Pleasant Mills Spartans took down the tourney honors in 1940 and 1942, the Decatur Yellow Jackets took down the bunting in 1941 and 1944, the Monroe Bearkatz in 1943 and 1947, and the Berne Bears in 1945 and 1946. IncTdentially, as may be noted, the Berne Bears are the only team to have won the title two consecutive years. In these eight years, only two Decatur sectional champions have carried on to win regional titles. Monroe won at Huntington in 1943 and the Decatur Yellow Jackets copped the regional in 1944. Both the Bearkatz and Yellow Jackets, however, were defeated by Fort Wayne Central in the first round of the Muncie semi-final. Last year, the Monroe Bearkatz were eliminated in the first round of the Huntington regional by the Portland Panthers, 36-33. Port-* land then fell before the Huntington Vikings in the regional final. The first three years the sectional was held here in this most recent span, only nine teams were (Turn To Page 8, Column 5)

"WelcMte |BS^ WL — — WARM WELCOME from the Decatur Daily Democrat to the Adams county high school basketball players, coaches, school officials and fans as the zero hour for’the sectional tourney draws near. LOOKING OVER the season records of the 10 competing quintets, and studying the pairings for the sectional, the 1948 meet looks like a “daisy.” Another highly interesting tournament appears to be in store, with the chances of those nearly always-present upsets definitely high. MONROE’S BEARKATZ are the defending champions. However, the champs are given little chance to repeat this year, the Bearkatz having had one of theii poorest seasonal records in several years. —oOg— JUST IN CASE you fans may have forgotten, following are the results of all games in the 1947 sectional. Yellow Jackets 46, Pleasant Mills 43. Monroe 42, Commodores 35. Jefferson 38, Geneva 37Kirkland 36, Monmouth 34. Berne 39, Hartford 37. Monroe 35, Yellow Jackets 30. Kirkland 48, Jefferson 42. Monroe 29, Berne 25. Monroe 38, Kirkland 29 (final). STARTING WITH the “modern” sectional back in 1940, BASKETBAWL, just for a lark, published his tournament predictions. The fans seemed to enjoy it, however, so here we are again for the ninth year in a row. In these eight years, exactly, half, or four, of our predictions have come through to the tourney crown. However, we have had only one perfect year, 1941, when we hit every winner right on the dot. f Last year, however, our choice for the sectional title fixed us up with an air-tight alibi. We picked the Monmouth Eagles. But, just a few days before the tourney, the Eagles’ ace scorer, Arnold Getting, came down with the mumps and the Eagles were blown out of the tourney in the first round. Here we go again: HARTFORD-GENEVA — The Hartford Gorillas have been right up at the top all season long, and there seems no legitimate reason to overlook that fine record. So, we pick HARTFORD. YELLOW JACKETS-MONMOUTH — This might easily be THE game of the entire tourney. Monmouth copped the county tourney, has a great season record, and the county’s leading scorer in Getting. However, the Jackets have displayed plenty of power when on their game, have played a tougher schedule, and have that home floor advantage. So, we pick the YELLOW JACKETS. KIRKLAND-BERNE—Herc-’s one which could be a real fooler. Not much to choose here on season records, but Berne ordinarily is a better tournament team and is more used to a larger floor than the Kangaroos. So, we pick BERNE. -—oOo— PLEASANT MILLS-COMMODORES—These teams broke even during the regular season in a pair of games. Despite the Commodores’ slump in recent games, they (Turn To Page 8, Column 1)

The tournament will be resumed with two games Friday afternoon. In the first Friday tilt at 1:30 o’clock, the Berne Bears will clash with the Kirkland Kangaroos. Closing out the Friday afternoon session, the Pleasant Mills Spartans will swap baskets with the Decatur Commodores, who went into a woeful slump in the last two weeks of the regular season. ' The Bearkatz will meet the downtrodden Jefferson Warriors in this clash, the winner to advance to the semi-finals. Semi-finals will be played Saturday afternoon. Winners of the Friday afternoon contests will meet in the first semi-final at 1:15 p.m., followed by the winners of the Friday night games. The two quintets victorious in the semi-final encounters will take the floor at 8:15 o'clock Saturday night, with the winner emerging some 75 minutes later as the 1948 Decatur sectional champion. The officials for all tournament games, assigned by the Indiana high school athletic association, will be Clay Layman, of Marion, and Gene Winks, of Winona Lake.
