Byrnes, a graduate of a New York City high school, still holds the national high school championship record of jumping six feet, four and three-quarters inches, which he set in 1936. From prep school he moved to Manhattan college, New York, on a scholarship, and was intercollagiate champion there in 1938, 1939 and 1940. He was hailed as national champion in 1940.
