During 1947 Chicago, Feb. 5 — (TTP) — Ac.jdents killed more people in their ioines than on the highways last /ear, the national safety council ■eported today. The council said it was the first ime in 20 years, except for a brief jeriod of wartime driving restricions, that more people were killed iccidentally at home than in trafic. All told, deaths from all types >f accidents in 1947 were two percent higher than in 194 G. The safety council's i eport showed that this is what accidents did to the U. S. last year: Killed — 100,000. Injured — 10,500,000. Cost — 16.700,000,000 in wages, medical expenses and property damage. Traffic deaths dropped from 33,<ll in 1946 to 32,000 last year —a f four percent decrease. * But 33,500 persons died in home accidentß during 1 947. compared with 32,500 in 1946. The council blamed the over-all higher death toll on an increase in the number of deaths from public accidents other than traffic, which totalled 19,000 compared with 17.-' 000 in 1946. Passenger fatalities on scheduled domestic air transports increased to 199, compared with 75 the previous year. The railroad accident toll dropped to 3,834, a two percent decrease, during the first 11 months of 1947. Seven percent fewer .pas sengers — 1,329 — died in railroad accidents than during the same period in 1946. Seven disasters cairned 50 or more deaths each, the council reported. They were the Texas City, Tex., blast, the Texas-Oklahoma tornado in April, the Centralia, 111., coal mine explosion, three airline crashes, and the gulf coast hurricane in September. Twenty-eight of 43 states which reported their complete motor vehicle death toll for the year had decreases, compared with 1946. Jacksonville, Fla., had the greatest reduction of traffic fatalities among cities of 200,000 population or over — 54 percent fewer than in 1946. Long Beach, Cal., was ■second with 51 percent less and Newark, N. J., and Oklahoma City tied for third with 44 percent drops. Milwaukee, Wis., led cities of 500,000 or more poplation with only 3.5 traffic deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles. Kokomo, Ind., in the 25,000-50,000 population group reported no deaths. o— Coal Production Lower In Indiana Terre Haute, Ind., Feb. 5 — (UP) — Indiana’s coal production last month was reduced about 90,000
