Evansville's Central Given First Defeat Indianapolis, Feb. 4 — (UP) Mighty Evansville Central, regarded as one of the classiest Hoosier schoolboy quintets, and East Chicago Washington, another powerful chib, saw their victory strings snapped today as the teams prepared for the “pay-off” of the regular campaign. Central’s Golden Bears, atop the United Press weekly rankings for eight consecutive weeks, were s’ung last night by city rival Reitz. 51-41. It was their first loss in 15 starts. Washington's Senators, leaders in the western division of the northern Indiana conference, absorbed their first conference loss and their second of the season, falling behind up-and-coming Hammond High, 47-32. Both games highlighted the Tuesday night schedule and will have more than their share of significance by the time the week’s hardwood battles are history and the experts take a look at the score board. With the regular season ending on or about Feb. 20 and many conference races still to be settled, the 1948 campaign appeared to be one of the most hotly-contested in re- , cent years. For Evansville Central the loss was a hard blow in its bid for a , perfect season. It also means a possible tie for the southern Indiana ] conference title. The Bears’ record in the conference stands at eight wins and one loss while Princeton's , Tigers are just a game behind with a record of seven and one. Last night’s game was similar to the Bears’ first defeat last year. Then Jasper turned the trick after 1 the pocket city club had won its first 15 games. Reitz like Jasper a year ago, was ready for the kill. Clarence and Walter Riggs coaches for Reitz and for Central, respectively, brothers who have little to hide from each other, had their teams geared up but the Panthers got the jump first. They led 11-6 at the quarter, , tightened up their defense to take I a 24-16 halftime lead. Central's usually smooth-working machine composed of Gene Southwood, Lee Hamilton and Joe .Schwitz never found the range as a trio while 1 Reitz turned loose Malcolm Cook i.nd center Ed Wassel, who tallied ;
16 and 11 points, respectively. Schwitz was high for the losers Tonight & Thursday 0 0 OUR BIG DAYS! The East Chicago WashingtonHammond fracas was strikingly similar with the Hammond club controlling the game from the start. The Wildcats had a 10-point, 19-14, half-time lead as they guarded Ed Ragelis and Randy Balas, the Senators’ high scorers, closely. High had a comfortable 10-point lead as the fourth stanza got under way and exploded with a 16-point splurge to make the victory complete. The Senators were never in the game a contrast to their tilt with LaPort last Saturday in which ’ they whipped the Slicers, 51-43. East Chicago Roosevelt also met defeat last night, going down to Gary Tolleston, 47-36; Frankfort took a north central conference game from Logansport, 33-26; Princeton poured it on Ft. Branch. 51-38. and Bicknell walloped Sullivan, 57-39, in other games. o H. S. BASKETBALL Evansville Reitz 51, Evansville Central 41. Terre Haute Wiley 46, Linton 42.
