Communists Order Wallace Backing Order Nationality Groups Lined Up L Washington. Feb. 2 — (UP) The Communist party high command has ordered local cells to lineup the nationality groups for Henry A. Wallace's presidential campaign. American Communists operate negro. Slav and similar front organizations. Best progress for Wallace so far is reported to Communist headquarters in New York from the slavs. Among themselves Communist leaders are talking of 7,000,000 to 9,000,000 votes for Wallace next November. They evidently believe some such total can be scheduled. Non-Communist polls have indicated Wallace might get as many as 5,000,000 votes. If Wallace got 5,000,000 votes largely from the big, industrial states his third party candidacy mere than likely would insure President Truman's defeat and the election of a Republican. Country-wide Communist participation in the Wallace campaign was planned a few- days after he announced his presidential candidacy last month. William Z. Foster, chairman of the Communist party of the United States. Eugene Dennis. also a party official, and a representative of tile Communist press conferred on the matter at New York party headquarters. They de-

cidede on immediate activity among nationality groups in behalf of Wallace. The party’s nationality groups commission was instructed I to contact all susceptible organizations. District organizers throughout the United States were instructed to pass the word op to Copimunipts and fellow travellers withip the various nationality group organizations-, Several days ago the Communist high command met again in New York. First reports in were from the American slay congress which was described as pretty well organized for Wallace. Foster and Dennis estimate 1,000,000 Wallace votes can be obtained through the Slav congress if it is ppoperly manipulated. Those votes would copie largely from Michigan, Illinois, New York. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. They mostly would be left wing votes which Mr. Truman otherwise might expect to get. Their loss would be bad for the Democrats in a close election. The Communists plan extensive propoganda among Jewish and negro groups and within labor unions. Party workers kere instructed after second New York meetings to have their machinery set up by Feb. 15 and their reports in New York before the end of the month. New Yo.rk headquarters also is prodding party members in the unions for continued activity in Wallace’s behalf. At the most recent Communist party high command huddle the leaders believed good organization of the nationality groups and moderate success within the unions would assure Wallace of a minimum of 7,000,000 votes. They felt that would be ample to assure Mr. Truman’s defeat and to set up American politics for the election of Wallace to the presidency in 1952. The Communists have no delusions about winning this year. _o .— Red Men Open House Wednesday Evening Open house w’ill be held Wednesday night by the Decatur lodge of the Improved Order of Red Men and all members will have the privilege of bringing a guest to the regular meeting. Building Limit Still in Effect In response to inquiries, John E. Williams, area rent director -attorney, said today that the construction limitation regulation under which aufhorizatj.Qn must be obtained from the office of the housing expediter to construct amusement or recreation facilities is still in effect and will remain so at least until the expiration of the housing and rent act of 1947 on February 29. What happens after that depends on whether or not congress extends the authority to control such construction. The purpose of the present control, the area rent director said, is to conserve scarce building materials for housing and other essential construction. The county poad was icy at the intersection and both drivers said they were driving slowly but were unable to stop because of the road conditions. 0 RADIOACTIVE IODINE radioactive substances other than iodine that will penetrate other types of cancer. This first key —radioactive iodine —actually was found before the atomic bomb was developed. But in those early days, back in the 1930 s. the making of radioactive iodine was expensive. It was created in the cyclotron, a so-called atom smashing machine. Today it is made comparatively cheaply in the atomic laboratories at Qak Ridge. Tenn. Radioactive iodine is the same as to taste and its chemical properties as the product that a person buys in a drug store, except that it thrpws off radiation, apd is used in extremely small amounts. Radioactive iodine is an important key in cancer because normal thyroid has an affinity for iodine. It collects iodine from the blood stream and uses it to make a hormone known as thyroxin, The normal thyroid picks up iodine whether it is radioactive or not. The radio-active substance carries with it two forms of radiation or sparks. One type of radiation is the Beta ray. Th,e invisible Beta rays travel about ,07874 of an inch. The other type of radiation is the Gamma ray. Gamma rays are so penetrating they will go through incites of lead. Thyroid cancer itself is a rare form and of all thyroid cancer cases only about 15 percent are initially suitable for treatment with radioactive iodine. This is because some thyroid tissue, once it becomes cancerous, loses most of its desire to collect iodine. In the case of the 15 percejit of thyroid cancers that do pick up the iodine, it has been found-that such can-; cers more closely resemble the structure of the original normal gland. So tire Memorial thyroid team is concentrating its efforts on the type of cancer thyroid that picks up radioactive iodine. Surgery still is the best weapon for thyroid cancer that has not spread from the original location in the neck. AREYOGPAU WEAK.TIRfS due to MONTHLY LOSSES ?
