certain to be the highest point of the two weeks’ old murder trial in Shelby circuit court today. Watts is accused of the shotgun death of Mrs. Mary Lois Burney in Indianapolis last Nov. 12. The state closed its case against the 25-year-oid negro truck driver yesterday, and Watts was the fourth defense witness called. He was on the stand when judge Harold Barger called a recess yesterday afternoon. Watt’s testimony yesterday con-

f tradicted that given earlier by i practically every prosecution witness. n The 25-year-old defendant, nattiy ly dressed in the same “Holly--3 wood” jacket he has worn since 3 the trial opened, grinned as he - took the stand after his wife, i pastor and a friend testified for t him. He told the court of his day's - work as an Indianapolis city truck driver on the day in question. He . said his first duty was to take other city workers to the University Heights section of Indianapolis. Then he said he was told to go to a private home on northside Indianapolis to ask about delivery of road materials. He said he had hauled city-owned supplies to private residences three times during his two months’ work for the city. Watts then told a story, denied by prosecution witnesses, that he went to the home of Mrs. Harriet Stout, after she had telephoned him, where she gave him a shotgun to keep for several days. The state has established that gun was the death weapon in the killing of Mrs. Burney. It was on a complaint by Mrs. * Stout that Watts was first arrested.

Farm Ownership Borrowers Meet Annual Meeting Is Held Wednesday The annual meeting of the farm ownership borrowers served by the local office of the farmers home administration was held here Wednesday, with families from Allen, Jay, Blackford, Wells and Adams counties. The state office was also represented. Purpose of the meeting was to study and analyze records of income and expenses, which the borrower families kept during the year, and to exchange ideas for more efficient farming and home management practices. The informal discussion was led by Donald A. Norquest, local FHA supervisor, with the aid of charts drawn to illustrate pertinent facts. It was pointed out that of the aver-* age gross income of $5,000, 38 percent, or $1,9(10, would have been paid as rent on a 50-50 livestock share basis, whereas the annual payment, including interest, plus taxes, insurance and upkeep totaled only 29 percent, or $1,450, showing that by owning their farms, this group gained $450 toward better living last year. Another fact revealed was that by paying approximately S2OO a year more than the annual installment, the 40-year loans would be liquidated in 22 years, with a saving- of $3,600 interest. The meeting closed with a social get-together, with those present bringing covered dishes, and dessert and refreshments served by the county FHA staff. 0 The cotton textile industry in North Carolina has raised more than SBOO,OOO for textile education at North Carolina State College.
