It took 1,557,000 acres to produce this crop and the average yield was 23 bushels per acre against 21.5 a year earlier. Hay is another important crop in Indiana, and last year 1,647,000 acres were devoted to the various kinds of hay, clover, alfalfa, lespedeza, soybeans, cowpeas, grain, sweet clover, etc. The production was 2,284,000 tons, an important factor in livestock production. A picture of the variety of crops grown in this state may be gleaned from the following production figures for 1947 for the products rated as less important in the entire State picture: 840,000 bushels of rye from 60,000 acres, an average of 14 bushels per acre, compared to 13.5 a year ago. 520,000 bushels of barley from 20,000 acres, an average of 26 bushels per acre. 252,000 bushels of buckwheat from 18,000 acres. 207,000 bushels of sweet potatoes from 1,800 acres grown commercially. 3,750,000 bushels of white potatoes from 25,000 acres, grown commercially, an average of 150,000 bushels per acre. 3,750,000 bushels of white potatoes from 25,000 acres, grown commercially, an average of 150,000 bushels per acre. 12,950,000 pounds of tobacco, the yield from 10,000 acres, an average of 1295 pounds per acre. 14,100,000, ponnds of popcorn, produced on 9,400 acres; now devoted to commercial production of this crop in Hoosierdom. 21,000 bushels of cowpeas produced from 3,000 acres, an average of seven bushels per acre. 70,000 gallons of sorghum sirup, from 1,000 acres, an average of 70 gallons per acre. 82,000 bushels of red clover seed from 126,000 acres, an average of 0.65 bushel an acre. 2,000 bushels of alsike clover seed from 2,000 acres; one for one. 65,000 bushels of timothy seed from m 17,000 acres, an average of 3-H bushels per acre. 10,500 bushels of sweet clover seed from 3,500 acres, an average of three bushels an acre. 8,000,000 bushels of lespedeza seed from 29,000 acres, an average of 275 bushels per acre. 3,800 bushels of alfalfa seed from 5,000 acres, an average of three quarters of a bushel per acre.
1,489,000 bushels of commercial apples produced in 1947, which was 27 percent above last year, and six percent above average. 725,000 bushels of peaches which represents a 40 percent increase over last year, and more than twice an average crop. 154,000 bushels of pears, an increase of about 15 percent. 2,400 bushels of grapes, 400 bushels more than last year.
