Four Big Nine Games Carded For Saturday Chicago, Jan. 16—(UP) — Supporters of the once-defeated Illinois basketball team will find out tomorrow what chance their favorites have to bring home the Big Nine cage title denied the postwar “Whiz Kids” last year. The basket-popping Illini face Minnesota, a twice-defeated title favorite which has yet to win a league game, at Minneapolis before one of the most partisan crowds in the loop. And if Illinois can win this one. it will have a chance to start the last half of the campaign on even terms with the league-leading Wisconsin five. Illinois, which romped through I seven straight games without defeat before conference play began. lost its Rig Nine opener to the Badgers. Since then it has] defeated Northwestern and Ohio State to move into a tie for second place with lowa. A victory over Minnesota would leave Illinois in second place, but it would indicate that the Illini can win their share of league games on strange floors, and it would give the Harry Combes five a chance to move into a tie with Wisconsin Jan. 24. Illinois plays Indiana at Champaign Monday and will be favored to win that contest. The next game for the Illini then will be against their Wisconsin conquerors at Champaign, and that game will rate as a tossup. But a victory for Illinois, duplicating a triumph over the Badgers at Champaign last year, would deadlock the two clubs. Unless someone beats Wisconsin before then and that appears unlikely. Thus far, Illinois has won nine out of ten clashes, losing only at Wisconsin and winning eight games at home and one away. The Minnesota - Illinois clash headlines a slate of four league games. Wisconsin entertains which has a record of one win and one loss in the conference, and the Badgers will be favored to win
