Mayor Quits, Woman lakes Over Position Too Tough For Man, Job Goes To Woman East Carondelet, 111., Jan. 8 (IIP) The mayor of East Carondelet (pop. 600) up and quit. He said the Job was "too big for one man.’' So the village council appointed a woman. Mrs. Dorothy Pugh, the new mayor, is 31 years old and has three kids. Her husband. Lloyd, is a Missouri Pacific engineer. And as if she didn't have enough work with al that, Mrs. Pudg holds down two other outside jobs. The other womenfolk of this little Mississippi river community don't like it. At least, some of those interviewed in the town's only market were pretty bitter about it. One. a working girl herself, said "It's disgusting. The job of mayor deserves a man." She wouldn't give her name, though. "You think I'm nuts?" she said. Mrs. Pugh, who stands about five feet five In high heels, said she doesn’t mind the comments. "They'll get used to me." she said. “I've got a man’s job cut out. and there’s a lot to be done for our town." The new mayor said she’s an old hand at politics. Small town, that is. For years she's been chairman of the town's finance committee. She also works full time at night as a railroad clerk and does a little waiting on tables at Jake’s Tavern on her off hours. A maid takes care of the kids. Mrs. Pugh is the first woman mayor in the 150-year' history of East t’arondelet. 10 miles south of St. Ixmis. The former mayor. George L. ' Riebling. resigned two days ago. ' saying the job was too much for him i Riebling said that in the three . years he was mayor, he had in- [ creased the town's treasury from $162 to SBOO and put in four new street lights. "But 1 had to borrow money from my brother to operate 13 street lights before I talked the council into kicking in with enough money to run all 30 lights." be explained. “1 had to cut the weeds along the streets myself." he added. "But I think Mrs. Pugh will get along as well as anybody." o — The Street and Traffic Safety Lighting Bureau says half of the I night fatal traffic accidents are i attributable to inadequate thoroughfare lighting. o Trntle in n (iood Town — Decntur — 0 ARAB, JEWISH (Continued from Pace 14 jurevl in addition to three Jews shot ami killed while trying to escape.
