Clamp On Gambling, Traffic Violations New City Officials Active In Indiana Indianapolis, Jan. 7. —(UP) — Most of the 101 Indiana towns with new mayors were getting that “new look” today. Gamblers and traffic violators were feeling the brunt of what was turning out to be a state-wide cleanup campaign. In some cities, mayors were also shaking up the old “city hall gangs,” while others were continuing with largely the same municipal staffs. No more “fixing” of traffic tickets was announced by Democratic mayor Al Feeney in Indianapolis. Police took the mayor at his words, and at one time yesterday the force was down to a supply of less than 1,000 blank parking tickets. But a hurry call to the printer produced a promise of ample stickers for law violators’ cars, and the police did not slacken their drive to rid the city of illegal parkers The Indianapolis drive was so widespread that it even caught mayor Feeney, who wrote a check for 4 for two tickets awarded his vehicle. Gambling received the major share of attention at Evansville and Terre Haute. All houses were ordered to close up at Evansville as chief Paul Bonham instructed his men to “enforce the law” on gambling and prostitution. In New Castle and Columbus, minor traffic and parking violations were the highlights of the enforcement drive. Among the 65 persons issued traffice tickets in New Castle were ex-mayor Sidney E. Baker, who just retired after his third term, and four Henry county political leaders, including a former sheriff.

Fighting Continues On Chinese Fronts Communist Forces Circle Tsingtao Shanghai, Jan. 7. —(UP) — Communist troops have thrown a semicircle around Tsingtao, north China port and American naval base, threatening inhabitants with starvation and freezing, reports from the city said today. Nearly 300.000 refugees have fled into the city, which has a normal population of 800,000. the reports said. The situation was reported "most serious.” Dispatches from other China fighting fronts reported the recapture of Honsueh. on the northern bank of the important Yangtze river 110 miles west of Hankow, but said the Communists still were probing across the river into the Hunan province “rice bowl.” A dispatch from Peiping said the Communists struck an area north of Peiping, occupying the Peitsang rail station and the port of Tangku after a three-hour battle. In Manchuria, Chinese press reports said the government’s air force kept up daily sweeps, strafing and bombing Communist concentrations around the oute- perimeter of the Mukden area. 0 Scientists estimate that the eyes consume about one-quarter of the total nervous energy of the body. Prosperity needs Christ to temper it; adversity needs Him to assuage it.
